Brief explanation about Section Modulus (S)
It is ratio of area moment of inertia (I) of the beam about the neutral axis of the beam , subjected to bending, to the distance of the outermost layer of the beam from its neutral axis (y).
Its a geometric property for a given cross-section. It can be also expressed as -

In other words, moment of resistance offered by a section for a certain bending stress, it can said that,
moment of resistance (M) is directionally proportional to the section modulus of the section (Z).
This is the reason, more the section modulus, beam will be stronger for a given value of bending stress.
Hence, while the design of beams, section modulus is the property of the cross-section that is used
Section Modulus study-
Case-I:
For the Hood Assembly, designed, section modulus is calculated.

I (min) = Moment of Inertia Minimum = 14263.81 mm4
Y = p23= 882.1 mm
S1= I / Y
= 14263.81 mm4 / 882.1 mm
S1=16. 170 mm3 - (1)
Case II;
To improve for section modulus, inner panel is lower by 0.5 mm. and section modulus is calculated.

I (min) = Moment of Inertia Minimum = 14447.92 mm4
Y = p23= 882.1 mm
S2= I / Y
= 14447.92 mm4 / 882.1 mm
S2=16. 379 mm3 - (2)
In terms of Percentage, 1.01% rise in section modulus value indicate 1.01% increase in strength of section.
Conclusin- By increasing gap between inner and outer panel, Its strength can be improved.
* There is limitation, iner panel can not be lowered as enginine compartment pasrt are limiting factor.
