Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
To calculate the section modulus of the Hood design and also need to calculate the section modulus of the optimised design of hood and need to compare.
OBJECTIVE:
Need to use the section from the Hood design and calulate the section modulus using the formula.
SECTION MODULUS:
Section modulus is a geometry property used to calculate the bending stress in a structural member.
mathematically, It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis and to the distance of the extreme layer of the neutral axis.
It is denoted by S,
S=I/Ymax
I=Moment of inertia in mm^4
y=Distance from neutral axis to ectreme layer in mm
units of section modulus is mm^3
NEUTRAL AXIS:
Line of intersection of neutral layer with plane of cross section.It passes through C.G.of cross section.The axis where strain changes there sign.
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION OF HOOD DESIGN:
CASE-1: INTIAL HOOD DESIGN

Obtained moment of inertia is
I=1.54604323e^+04
Ymax=Y/2=882.1/2=441.05mm.
S=1.54604323e^+04/441.05
S=35.05mm^3
CASE-2: OPTIMISED HOOD DESIGN
For incresing the moment of ineria we are incresing cross sectional area by offseting the inner pannel about 0.5mm towards and same analysis we done for the closed surface and results we shown below

Obtained moment of inertia is
I=1.572511222e^+04
Ymax=Y/2=882.1/2=441.05mm.
S=1.572511222e^+04/441.05
S=35.65mm^3
conclusion:
The section modulus of Hood design based on above 2 cases, we can conclude that case2 is more than case 1 on comparison. By increasing the cross sectional area of the Hood the section modulus increses and strenth of the design also increses.
