Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALUCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION :
Aim's of the challange -
To calculate the section modulus of the previously designed hood for analyzing its strength and also optimizing the design to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes to bending.
Section modules -
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members, it is also referred to as the Polar Modulus or the Torsional Sectional Modulus.
Section modulus is the ratio of bending to the farthest fiber from neutral axis, or it is the measure of the strength of the beam.Ratio of Area Moment of Inertia to the Distance from the Neutral Axis to the Point where the Bending Normal Stress is determined.
Section modulus (S) = I/Y
I = Moment of inertia of structure.
Y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

TYPES OF SECTION MODULAS :
1 ELASTIC SECTION MODULAS
2 PLASTIC SECTION MODULAS
The plastic section modulus assumes the entire section yields.The plastic modulus is after yielding. plastic section modulus, elastic section modulus.
FOR HOOD DESIGN :
IN CASE 1 :

MOI (max) :5.282225093
MOI (min) :1.590100285
Y = 897.695/2 = 448.847
S = I/Y
S = 1.590100285X 10^3/448.847
using Minimum Moment of Inertia and extreme distance of layer, we got the section modulus(S) value is =3.542688452455 mm^3
IN CASE 2
In order to increase the resistance to bending of HOOD and i have made some of the changes in the mastersections of the hood , We have to make an improvement in section modulus of HOOD

MOI (max) :5.350454991
MOI (min) :1.620393177
Y = 897.695/2 = 448.847
S = I/Y
S = 1.620393177 X 10^3/448.847
using Minimum Moment of Inertia and extreme distance of layer, we got the section modulus(S) value is =3.60924769464 mm^3
CONCLUSION:
Different section, as shown above, were tried in order to achieve a higher moment of inertia. It is observed that increasing the gap between the inner and outer panels has resulted to improve the section modulus. Hence it is the best to add more geometric features to the master section to more the stiffness of section. However, this could result in an increase in manufacturing cost.
