Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim: The main objective of this project is to understand and learn the basic tools and advanced tools used in NX and calculation as well as section modulus and optimization of Car Hood.
Section modulus
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members, it is also referred to as the Polar Modulus or the Torsional Sectional Modulus. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. Equations for the section moduli of common shapes are given below. There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus.
S= I / Y
S - section modulus
I - the moment of inertia
y - the distance between the neutral axis and the end of the object
Section modulus of different shapes
Procedure for making section modulus
Creating a plane at centre

Creating intersecting

Section moudulus with normal intersection

so we can find that Y =875.5 / 2
= 437.75
Here the minimum moment of inertia = 1.400213354e+06 [mm^4]
Therefore the Section Modulus S = I/Y
=1.400213354e+04 / 437.75
=31.9865 [mm^3]
we have to consider the minimum value because from the point only the substance starts to change from its original shape.
Section moudulus with 1 mm offset

Moment of inertia (max)=4.541205127e+06 [mm^4]
Moment of inertia (min)= 1.419193056e+04 [mm^4]
y is the same Y =875.5 / 2
= 437.75
So section modulus S = I/Y = 1.419193056e+04 / 437.75
=32.420 [mm^3]
Section moudulus with consider a extra Emboss

Moment of inertia (max)=4.724214409e+06 [mm^4]
Moment of inertia (min)= 1.377466394e+04 [mm^4]
y is the same Y =875.5 / 2
= 437.75
So section modulus S = I/Y = 1.377466394e+04 / 437.75
=31.466 [mm^3]
CONCLUSION:
In this study, we take the minimum of inertia moment to analyze the minimum limit of hood deformation. Thus the section modulus of the front hood was calculated and compared with the new design.
From the result we found out that increasing the cross-section area would give a better section modulus and helps in increasing the strength of the hood.
