Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus Calculation
What is Section Modulus?
Section Modulus is the geometric property of the given cross-section of any shaft or beam structure. It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section or the beam section. The higher the section modulus of a structure, the more resistant it becomes to bending.
Usages of Section Modulus
This is used to improve the strength and rigidity of designed parts. also, it ensures product safety and prevents bending.
Types Of Section Modules
- Elastic Section Modules
- Plastic Section Modules

Elastic Section Modules
Elastic Section Modules are commonly used for calculating the Section modules of Solid Rigid body or sheet metal Components.
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
Plastic Section Modules
This is used to calculate the section modules of the plastic body or which have more elastic.

I max = 8.074267078e+05mm^4 = 8.074267078 x 105 = 807,427
I min = 5.100312145e+03mm^4 = 5.100312145 x 103 = 5,100
y = 485.6917 / 2 = 242.85mm
Section Modules for Imax
I= 807427 / 242.85mm = 3324.7971mm^3
Section Modules for Imin
I= 5100 / 242.85mm = 21.00mm^3
After modification in section

I max = 8.237836930e+05mm^4 = 8.237836930 x 105 = 823,784
I min = 5.886750134e+03mm^4 = 5.886750134 x 103 = 5,887
y = 485.6917 / 2 = 242.85mm
Section Modules for Imax
I= 823784 / 242.85mm = 3392.151mm^3
Section Modules for Imin
I= 5887 / 242.85mm = 24.24mm^3
Result
| Conditions | Before Modification | After Modification |
| I max condition | 3324.7971mm^3 | 3392.151mm^3 |
| I min Condition | 21.00mm^3 | 24.24mm^3 |
We can improve section modules by changing of design.
