Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Calculating the Section modulus of Hood and Optimizing it
Section Modulus
the section modulus of a cross section is very important in designing a component, Section modulus is direct measure of strength of a component or structure, more the section modulus of a component more load it can carry and stronger it is.
Formula
S= Section Modulus
I= Moment of Inertia
Y= Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
Case-1
We have Hood design from previous challenge to calculate section modulus as below,

From the Analysis we get,
Imax= 9.67006 e+005
Imax= 3.77076 e+003
Y=482.107/2=241.05mm
S= 9.67006 e+005/241.05
S (by considering Imax) = 5.95mm3
S (by considering Imin) = 0.31mm3
Case-2
The previous hood design is modified, analysing the component again we get below result.

From the Analysis we get,
Imax= 9.72936 e+005
Imax= 3.78985 e+003
Y=482.107/2=241.05mm
S= 9.72936 e+005/241.05
S (by considering Imax) = 5.99mm3
S (by considering Imin) = 0.315mm3
Modification done to achieve the results in case 2
I have offset the outer panel by 0.4mm to achieve increase in Moment of inertia which intern increased the section modulus
Conclusion
Thus, by changing the distance between outer panel and inner panel of Hood we achieved increased section modulus which will increase the strength of the Hood considerably.
