Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION
CALCULATION OF HOOD :-
AIM :-
To calculate the section modulus of the previously designed of hood for analyzing its strength and also optimizing the design to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the resistive it becomes to bending.
OBJECTIVE :-
Use the section from your hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula (S=I/y).
SECTION MODULUS :-
Section Modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members, it is also referred to as the polar modulus or torsional section modulus. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question.
Section Modulus is defined as the ratio of the second moment of area (Or moment of inertia) and the distance from the neutral axis to any given (or Extreme) fiber.

Changing the position can show the difference in bending which is because of the centroid distance from the extreme fiber end.

In Layman's terms, in this position there is more material from the axis to the specific direction, to resist the load which makes less bend and improves the strength.
CASE 1 :-
The intersection of the design was taken and then Section Inertia Analysis was done.

Moment of inertia (Max.) = 4.835691474 x 10^6 mm^4
Moment of inertia (Min.) = 1.471399387 x 10^4 mm^4
y = 440.4727 mm
(y is the distance from the neutral axis to extreme fiber).
By Using Section Modulus Formula :-
S=I/y
S= 1.471399387 x 10^4/440.4727
= 33.4050 mm^3
CASE 2 :-
By taking offset of the inner panel by 0.5 mm.

Moment of inertia (Max.) = 4.826747534 x 10^6 mm^6
Moment of inertia (Min.) = 1.490434277 x 10^4 mm^4
y = 440.4727 mm
(y is the distance from the neutral axis to extreme fiber).
By Using Section Modulus Formula :-
S=I/y
S= 1.490434277 x 10^4/440.4727
= 33.8371 mm^3
CASE 3 :-
By taking offset of the inner panel by 1.5 mm.

Moment of inertia (Max.) = 4.825820226 x 10^6 mm^6
Moment of inertia (Min.) = 1.535600986 x 10^4 mm^4
y = 440.4727 mm
(y is the distance from the neutral axis to extreme fiber).
By Using Section Modulus Formula :-
S=I/y
S= 1.535600986 x 10^4/440.4727
= 34.8625 mm^3
CASE 4 :-
After design Modification (Increase embossed in the hood inner panel).

Moment of inertia (Max.) = 4.880442378 x 10^6 mm^6
Moment of inertia (Min.) = 1.565077182 x 10^4 mm^4
y = 440.4727 mm
(y is the distance from the neutral axis to extreme fiber).
By Using Section Modulus Formula :-
S=I/y
S= 1.565077182 x 10^4/440.4727
= 35.5317 mm^3
CONCLUSION :-
So, here the difference can be seen in the moment of inertia and the change in the section modulus can be seen by the change in the design.
So, that I also made an improvement in resistance to bending of my hood design.
