Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS
OBJECTIVE:
- Calculate the section modulus of the hood.
- Modify section and obsereve the changes that occurs.
What is Section Modulus?
- Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. The geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness.
Section Modulus(S) : I/Y
I : Moment of inertia
Y: Distance of extreme layer from neutral axis.
Moment of Inertia : The opposition that the body exhibits to having its speed of rotation about an axis altered by the application of a torque. The axis may be internal or external and may or may not be fixed.
We had performed the few iterations performed over the ENGINE HOOD cross-section.
1. The exact hood cross-section without any iteration.
I(MIN): 2.22 x 10^6 mm^4; Y: 441.429 mm
S = I/Y = 5029.12 mm^3
2.Offset the outer panel with 2mm.
I(MIN): 2.625 x 10^6 mm^4; Y: 441.429 mm
S = I/Y = 5946.59 mm^3
3. Making the improvements in embosses.
I(MIN): 2.22 x 10^6 mm^4; Y: 441.429 mm
S = I/Y = 5248.86 mm^3
CONCLUSION
We had performed different calculations on the hood by altering the section. At first we took a actual section of Hood designed by the master section given where we got decent value for section modulus. To compare or to get better stiffness we offset the outer panel for 2mm where we observed the rise in section modulus but it is not feasible to increase the distance of outer panel. At last we tried to change the parameters of emboss which also result in increase of section modulus and changing the parameter of emboss is feasible there will be a increase in material but will get better results.
