Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Title- section modulus
Objective - calculate section modulus of a hood and optimize the section to improve strength
What is section modulus-
The geometric characteristic of any structure’s cross-section is called Section Modulus. It is a good measurement of the section's strength. The higher a structure's section modulus, the more resistant it is to bending.
Mathematically section modulus is
S= I/Y
Where
I= Moment of Inertia (mm^4)
Y=Distance from the neutral axis and outmost fiber (mm)
Result-

Total length of the hood section- L=875.8294mm
Now we can calculate the Y
Y= L/2
Y= 875.8294/2
Y=437.9147
Initial Cross section inertia analysis

Maximum Moment Of Inertia M1= 4.854972403 X 10^6 mm^4
Minimum Moment Of Inertia M2= 1.437670202 X 10^4 mm^4
We knows
Section modulus S = I/Y
S= M2/Y
S= (1.437670202 X 10^4) / 437.9147
Inertia S (min) S= 32.82991 mm^3
Optimize section- to optimize the section of the hood i increase the distance between inner panel and the outer panel. by offsetting the inner panel by 0.5mm. Due to this offset the cross section area increases and now we will analyze the change in section modulus.

Optimized cross section inertia analysis

Maximum Moment Of Inertia M1=4.845908884 X 10^6 mm^4
Minimum Moment Of Inertia M2=1.455336854 X 10^4 mm^4
We knows
Section modulus S = I/Y
S= M2/Y
S= ( 1.455336854 X 10^4) / 437.9147
Inertia S (min) S= 33.233340 mm^3
Observation-
Initial section modulus- S= 32.82991 mm^3
Final Section Modulus after optimising cross section- S= 33.233340 mm^3
Conclusion- by increasing the cross section area we observed that section modulus is also increases thus strengthening the hood.
