Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM: To calculate the section modulus using the section from Hood design and come up with a new section that has improved the section modulus of the previous section.
SECTION MODULAS:
- Section Modulus is the geometric property of the given cross-section of any shaft or beam structures
- It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section or the beam section
- Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes to bending
- It is the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre
- It gives us an idea about how much of load the given structure can take
Section Modulas can be calculated by the formula:
S = I/y
Where, S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
CALCULATIONS:

Imax = 8.2140×105 mm4
Imin = 6.5861×103 mm4
y = 484.1147/2
= 242.05 mm
S = I/y
= 6.5861×103/242.05
S = 27.2096 mm3
OPTIMIZATION:
The Hood inner panel curve is offset by 0.5mm outwards and section inertia analysis is done again in a similar way

Imax = 8.1966×105 mm4
Imin = 6.8098×103 mm4
y = 484.1147/2
= 242.05 mm
S = I/y
= 6.8098×103/242.05
S = 28.1338 mm3
CONCLUSION:
- It was observed that the value of Section Modulus (S) obtained in case 1 was S = 27.2096 mm3 and the value of Section Modulus (S) obtained in case 2 was S = 28.1338 mm3 i.e. the Section Modulas vaue obtained in case 2 was greater
- When the Hood inner panel curve is offset by 0.5mm outwards the cross section value of the section increases which in turn increases the strength of the section
- It can be concluded that when the cross-section increaes the Section Modulas also increases which in turn improves the strength i.e. higher the section modulus of a structure, higher is he strength and the more resistive it becomes to bending
