Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM: To calculate the section modulus of the hood panel and then optimizing the hood panel for better section

modulus.

section modulus:

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.

Other geometric properties used in the design include an area for tension and shear, the radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. It is termed as the ratio of the second moment of inertia and distance from NA (Neutral axis) to the extreme fiber. Also, it is the measure of the strength of a given member. The stress in the outermost section of the beam is

computed with the help of section modulus. It is indicated by S

Section modulus is indicated as follows

S Section Modulus

I= Moment of inertia

y distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

First analyse the base section.

Procedure:

1. Take the Hood intersection using the plane.

2. Take the intersection and using mulitple extract in all. then join the separately. Finally all line are joint via point split and line command for joining purpose.

3. We need measure inertia value so using fill and take the 2d section mode takes value for calculation purpose.

4. Initially takes the value details:

5. Take the overall length for Y distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object so using sketch tool and create the 2 points on outer edge surfaces. then take the distance value divided by 2 is half part of Y.

6. Then take 0.5 offset the outer surface for calculation.

7. As well as the same procedure for itself also. the max and min values are

Calculation 1:

Y=479.562/2

=239.781

I(min)=6.255*10^5mm^4

I(max)=1.464*10^8mm^4

S=I/Y

S=146400000/239.781

S=610557.133

Calculation 2:

Y=479.562/2

=239.781

I(min)=6.593*10^5mm^4

I(max)=1.513*10^8mm^4

S=I/Y

S=151300000/239.781

S=630992.447

therefore the value of section modulus is increased from 610557.133 mm^4 to 630992.447 mm^4 with 0.5 mm offset of the inner panel to outside.

By the result of this we can say that increase in the cross sectional area of the section , the minimum loadtaking capacity of the part will be increased.
