Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Objective:

To Calculate Section modulus of Hood Assembly and optimize it.

Section modulus is a property used to determine the sectional strength of a particular part which is used to optimize the sections and improve the part strength.

It is termed as ratio of Second moment of inertia and distance from Neutral Axis to extreme fiber end.

Z= I/Y

Where I is the moment of Inertia and Y is the distance.

It is directly proportional to the moment of inertia and inversly to the distance, so by varying the depth of any model we can get a higher moment of inertia thus improving the overall section modulus.

Example:

In this case

Imin = 1.68636X10*4 mm^4

Imax = 5.177X10*6 mm^4

Y = 910.7/2 = 455.35mm

Zmin= I/Y = 37.02mm^3

Optimised Section:

In this case

Imin = 1.822X10*4 mm^4

Imax = 5.138X10*6 mm^4

Y = 910.7/2 = 455.35mm

Zmin= I/Y = 40.01 mm^3

Conclusion:

So by varying the depth locally we have a improved section modulus.
