Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM: TO CAL CULCULATE THE SECTION MODULUS & MODIFY THE SECTION TO IMPROVE THE OVERALL SECTION MODULUS.
DESCRIPTION
The section modulus -the ratio of moment of inertia of section about the neutral axis to the distance of outer most layer from neutral axis.
the section modulus is a geometric property which determines how much load a structure can withstand without failure.
S=I/Y
Where
S= Section modulus
I= min area moment of inertia
Y= distance b/w neutral axis & extreme end of the object
CALCULATION OF SECTION MODULUS BEFORE MODIFICATION
FOR COMPLETE SECTION

Y=578.2/2 = 289.1
2.01753*10^3=2017.1
S=I/Y
I=area moment of inertia.2.01753827*10^3 mm^4
Y= distance b/w neutral axis & extreme end of the object.289.1
S=2017.1/289.1=6.977mm^3
FOR MODIFIED SECTION
In this case i have added the embosses & increased the offset value of inner panel to 0.9mm to outer panel.

I HAVE MODIFIED THE EMBOSSES & ALSO INCREASED THE OFFSET VALUE OF 0.9mm
i have tried maximum modification on the object.
S=I/Y
IN THIS CASE MIN MOMENT OF INERTIA
I=area moment of inertia. 2.197.7*10^3=2197.7mm^4
Y =distance b/w the neutral axis & extreme end of the object.=289.1
S=2197.7/289.1
S=7.6018mm^3
CONCLUSION
Thus the strength of the hood assembly was sucessfully increased by modifying it. the safety of the vehicle also improved.
We can see that the value of S increased as the modification of the object & distance b/w the hood inner & outer panel is increased as S is directly proportional to moment of inertia.thus the section is proved that ok. & optimised better section modulus value.
