Section Modulus calculation and optimization
01) Objectives
*) To calculate the Section modulus for car hood using Catia V5.
02) Introduction
Section Modulus
*) Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.
*) It is the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extream fibre i,e
Section Modulus (S) = I / Y
Where I = Moment of inertia
Y = Distance between neutral axis & exteme end of the object.
*) Section modulus gives an idea about how much of a load the given structure can withstand.
*) If the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases & hence its load bearing capacity.
03) Calculatio of Section modulus for Car Hood
*) First take out the section from Hood & fill the surface to calculate the moment of inertia value (I)
*) Following image shows the 'I' value for section of Hood
Therefore Min. MI value M1 = 7.051*10^5 mm^4
Max. MI value M2 = 1.505*10^8 mm^4
*) Calculate Y vaue
Therefore Y = 239.069 mm
we can observe fromm the equation the section modulus is directly proportional to moment of inertia.
Hence Vaue of (S) for this section area is = 2949.3577168 mm^3
*) Change the section design & calculate the Section modulus
*) Offset the inner panel section by 0.5mm
*) Fill the surface & calculate the moment of inertia
Therefore Min. MI Value M1 = 7.42*10^5 mm^4
Max. MI value M2 = 1.552*10^8 mm^4
Y value remain same = 239.069 mm
And Section Modulus S = 3103.70646131 mm^3
*) Hence it is observed that if the area of the section increases the moment of inrtia increase and hence the section modulus.
04) Conclusion
The calculation for section modulus for car hood inner & outer panel has been done
