Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Objective
the main moto of this challenge is to define and understand the section modulus and how it utilizes in case of BIW fixture design in structural base
Definition of section modulus
- It is the ratio of the moment of inertia to the neutral axis distance from extreme points of the curve.
- it is an idea to understand that how much amount of the load that a structure takes.
- if section modulus increased then moment of inertia also increased for the part.
the mathmatical formule should be considered as follows
S = I/Y
where S = section modulus
I= moment of inertia
Y= neutral ais distance between the extreme points
also here we have a need to calculate the yeild moment i.e
My = S Χ Ꞇy
where S = section modulus
My = yeild moment
S = section modulus
Ꞇy = yeild stress
here yeild stress should be taken as 550 N/mm^2
were having different section modulus for different types of the shapes those are as follow
SECTION 1

Max moment of inertia = 5.0216866 105 mm4
Min moment of inertia = 878.008 mm4
Neutral distance = 250 mm
Maximum moment of the inertia
S= I/Y = 2008.67464 mm3
My = 2008.67464Χ550 = 1.10Χ105 N/mm2
Minimum moment of inertia
S= I/Y = 3.6462 mm3
My = 3.6462Χ550 = 2005.4463 N/mm2
Minimum moment of inertia
SECTION 2

Max moment of inertia = 4.63781 Χ105 mm4
Min moment of inertia = 1.511567 Χ103mm4
Neutral distance = 250 mm
Maximum moment of the inertia
S= I/Y = 1855.124 mm3
My = 2008.67464Χ550 = 1.02Χ105 N/mm2
Minimum moment of inertia
S= I/Y = 60.462 mm3
My = 60.462Χ550 = 33254.474 N/mm2
CONCLUSION
hence the section modulus of the car front hood is calculated using the above criteria and i concluded that the section modulus is increased while we increased the stiffness and the resistance of the hood
