INTRODUCTION

To generate the report on finding the section modulus for the hood design and improving it by based on the input and increasing the strength of the hood by using the software NX-CAD.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the project is to design a fender using Siemens NX-CAD.

Section Modulus:

It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape.

There are two types of section modulus,

  1. The elastic section modulus
  2. The plastic section modulus

Section Modulus can be calculated by using the Formula:

S=I/y

Where,

S-Section Modulus I- Moment of inertia

y- Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object

CHAPTER 2

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATIONS

Section 1:

Calculating section modulus for the hood design:

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.717455862e+06[mm^4]

Minimum moment of inertia = 1.266404664e+04[mm^4]

The total distance of the hood Y =880.1474 mm

Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (880.1474/2) = 440.073mm

To find section modulus, we have to calculate

S=I[minimum]/y

S= 1.266404664*10^4/440.073

S=28.777mm^3

Section 2:

Calculating section modulus by changing the dimensions of the hood design:

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.725769316e+06[mm^4]

Minimum moment of inertia = 1.580063046e+04[mm^4]

The total distance of the hood Y =880.1474 mm

Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (880.1474/2) = 440.073mm

To find section modulus, we have to calculate

S=I[minimum]/y

S= 1.580063046*10^4/440.073

S=35.9045mm^3

CHAPTER 3

RESULTS

Section 1:

S=28.777mm^3

Section 2:

S=37.9045mm^3

The difference between of case 1 and case 2 are the varying the distance between of hood inner panel and outer panel.

So, the Moment of inertia has been increased and the strength of the hood also increased.

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSSION

These calculation is necessary to know the design actual withstand capability of product. As we increase sectional area, the moment of inertia & section modulus increases it means capacity of material also increases
