Section Modulus calculation and optimization

OBJECTIVES:-

  • To calculate the section modulus of the designed hood and the optimized one.
  • To find out changes that have changed the section modulus of the optimized hood.

SECTION MODULUS:- It is the direct measure of the strength of any given section. A section that has a larger section modulus will depict higher strength. Its value mainly depends on a given member's cross-section and plays a significant role while designing any structural member. It is denoted by S. Section modulus of our hood can be given by

S= I/Y

where,

I= Moment of inertia

y=Distance between the neutral axis and remotest fiber of object

Design 1: Section modulus of the initially designed hood:-

From the above images, we can observe the following:-

Maximum moment of inertia I(max)= 511480.025 mm^4

Minimum moment of inertia I(min)= 21834.014 mm^4

S(max)= I(max)/Y= 511480.025/432= 1183.98 mm^3

S(min)= I(min)/Y = 21834.014/432 = 50.54 mm^3

Design 2: Section modulus of the optimized designed hood:-

From the above images, we can observe the following:-

Maximum moment of inertia I(max)= 550640.536 mm^4

Minimum moment of inertia I(min)= 10201.519 mm^4

S(max)= I(max)/Y= 550640.536/432= 1274.63 mm^3

S(min)= I(min)/Y = 10201.519/432 = 23.61 mm^3

I have increased the gap between the outer panel and the inner panel to achieve a higher value of section modulus in the optimized hood apart from that I also have reduced the depth of embosses.

CONCLUSION:-

  • After observing both designs we can say that the section modulus of the optimized hood has increased by a significant value.
  • we can increase the section modulus by increases the gap between the outer panel and the inner panel.
  • By reducing the depth of embosses we can achieve a higher section of modulus in the optimized hood
