Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS:
- Section modulus is a direct measure of strength of any sectional area of an object about an referance axis(neutral axis).
- Strength is nothing but,capable of supporting greater loads,so higher the strength it has a high capable of supporting greater loads.
- Section modulus represented with a symbol of ‘S’
S=I/y
I-Moment of inertia
y-Distance from the referance line(neutral axis)to one of the extreme end of an object
- Moment of inertia is nothing but the capacity of the cross section to resist bending.
- So higher the value of moment of inertia,have higher resistance to deform under certain load,hence we can say that moment of inertia is directly proportional to the strength of the material and the strength of the material can be calculated with the help of section modulus.
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION FOR HOOD DESIGN:
Case 1:Initial hood design
Minimum moment of inertia value is considered for section modulus calculation.Because,the maximum inertia value is the most susceptible for easy breaking of the hood part.

Moment of inertia,I=1.309008931e+04[mm˄4]
Distance from the referance line,Y=438mm
S=I/Y=1.309008931e+04/438=29.88mm3
Case 2:Changing the section for better section modulus
In order to increase the section modulus the inner curve is offset by 0.5mm

Moment of inertia,I=1.334105940e+04[mm˄4]
Distance from the referance line,Y=438mm
S=I/Y=1.334105940e+04/438=30.459mm3
Case 3:
Creating extra emboss to increase the section modulus.

Moment of inertia,I=1.319779889 e+04[mm˄4]
Distance from the referance line,Y=438mm
S=I/Y=1.319779889 e+04/438=30.131 mm3
Conclusion:
The increase in cross section and emboss increases the section modulus of the hood.
