Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM

To calculate the section modulus of hood design by using given formula.

SECTION MODULUS

Section modulus is geometric property for a given cross section used in the design of beams or flexible members,other geometric properties used in design include area of tension and shear , radius of gyration for compression,and second moment of area and polar second moment of area of stiffness.any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question.

There are two types of section modulus

1.Elastic section modulus

2.Plastic section modulus

1.ELASTIC SECTION MODULUS

The elastic section modulus is defined as S=I/y where I is the second moment area and Y is the distance from neutral axis to and given fibre.

2.PLASTIC SECTION MODULUS

The plastic section modulus is the sum of the areas of the cross section on each side of PNA multiplied by the distance from the local centroids of the two areas of PN

Maximum moment of interia =8.24914x10^5xmm^4

Mimimum moment of interia=5.73988x10^3xmm^4

Y=486.8461/2=243.423 mm

S=I/Y

S=5.73988x10^3xmm^4/243.423

S=23.57x10^3 mm
