Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Report On Section Modulus:
Objective:
- To Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula.
Section Modulus:
- The section modulus (S) is geometry property of the cross section used for designing beams and flexural members. It does not represent anything physically.
Formula:
S = I/y
Where,
- S = Section Modulus.
- I = Moment of Inertia.
- y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Hood Part:

Cross-Section Of Hood:

Calculation:
Case-1: Before Optimization.

- Section Modulus is calculated for the hood/bonet by taking the intersection.
MOI / I(Max):9.014090929*10ˆ7mmˆ4
MOI / I(Min):2.883564877*10ˆ5mmˆ4
Y=Total Distance/2=879.0086/2=439.5043mm
S=I/Y
S(Min)=(2.883564877*10ˆ5)/439.5043 = 0.656094*10ˆ3mmˆ3
S(Max)=(9.014090929*10ˆ7)/439.5043 = 205.096*10ˆ3mmˆ3
Case-2 : After Optimization.

- The intersection curve of hood inner panel is offsetted by 0.5mm towards outwards to improve section inertia analysis and then section inertia analysis is calculated on the closed curve.
MOI / I(Max):8.997305419*10ˆ7mmˆ4
MOI / I(Min):2.924980746*10ˆ5mmˆ4
Y=Total Distance/2=879.0086/2=439.5043mm
S=I/Y
S(Min)=(2.924980746*10ˆ5)/439.5043 = 0.665518118*10ˆ3mmˆ3
S(Max)=(8.997305419*10ˆ7)/439.5043 = 204.714844*10ˆ3mmˆ3
Conclusion:
- The section modulus of case-2 is higher than case-1 as the area increases moment of inertia,section modulus which results in increase of strength of the material.
