Section Modulus calculation and optimization

                                                                SECTION INERTIA ANALYSIS FOR HOOD FRONTAL IMPACT

SECTION MODULUS :

It is the ratio of moment of inertia about neutral axis to the distance of outer most fibre from neutral axis.

Moment Of Inertia :

Moment of Inertia of a Cross section of a beam is the measure of stiffness of the beam. Higher the moment of Inertia lesser would be the deflection of the beam in load condition.

CASE 1 :

The actual hood design is taken without any modification in cross section and section modulus is taken by calculating the minimum strength.

Section Modulus Z =  I / Y

Z - Section Modulus

I - Area moment of Inertia

Y - Distance from neutral axis to the outermost

AS per Case 1 Here we Calculated  Section modulus as ,

Z=I/Y  ,

Y = Total Distance from Neutral axis

Total Distance = 876.4576 mm ;  Y = 876.4576/2 = 438.2288 mm

Moment of Inertia I = 2.792881416*10^5 mm^4

Z =  2.792881416*10^5 mm^4 /  438.2288 mm

   =  637.3112 mm^3 .

So It is considered as section modulus for case 1 is 637.3112 mm^3.

CASE 2 :

In case 2 the cross section has been varied slightly by creating the offset of 0.5 mm as emboss of inner panel , And Result are as follows..

 Z=I/Y  ,

Y = Total Distance from Neutral axis

Total Distance = 876.4576 mm ;  Y = 876.4576/2 = 438.2288 mm

Moment of Inertia I = 2.836919479*10^5 mm^4

Z = 2.836919479*10^5 mm^4 / 438.2288 mm

  =  647.3603 mm^3

So it is considered as Section Modulus of Case 2 is 647.3603 mm^3

Hence by Referring this results of two cases  Moment of inertia is increased in Case 2 after some improvements made.
