Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim
To calculate the section modulus of the previously designed hood for analyzing its strength and also optimizing the design to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood. The higher the section modulus of a structure, the more resistant it becomes to bending.
Section modulus
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members, it is also referred to as the Polar Modulus or the Torsional Sectional Modulus. Other geometric properties used in the design include an area for tension and shear, the radius of gyration for compression, and the moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. Equations for the section moduli of common shapes are given below. There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus.
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
First Design Study

In this first case
MOI ( max) - 9.052297*10^4 mm^4
MOI(min) - 2.977916505*10^5 mm^4
S = I/Y
Y = 437.9975 mm
S = 2.977916505*10^5 mm^4 / 437.9975 = 680.348 mm^3
SECOND CASE - WE INCREASE THE THICKNESS OF THE INNER PANER TO 0.7 MM

MOI (max) - 9.026846368*10^7 mm^4
MOI (min) - 3.03817597*10^5 mm^4
S= I/Y
S= 3.03817597*10^5/437.9975 = 693.6514 mm^3
So we can clearly see that by increasing the thickness we can improve the section modulus
