Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus is a geometric property used to calculate the bending stresses in a structural member. Mathematically, It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis and to the distance of the extreme layer from the neutral axis.

Moment of Inertia:-

Inertia is the tendency of the body that resist change. Moment of inertia is the efficiency of body to resist bending due to load. The more the section modulus the more body resist the load. It depends on density of material, shape and size of body and distribution of mass relative to the axis.

CASE 1

S = I/y

 Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

I(min) = 2.65674624*10^4

hood distance = 879.00 mm

Y = 879/2 = 439.5

S = 2.65674624*10^4 / 439.5

S = 60.44 mm^3

CASE 2

here the sectional distance of Hood inner panel is offsetted by 0.5 mm to increase the minimun value of moment of inertia.

S = I/y

 Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

I(min) = 2.704834887*10^4

hood distance = 879.00 mm

Y = 879/2 = 439.5

S = 2.704834887*10^4  / 439.5

S = 61.54 mm^3
