Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS STUDY FOR HOOD DESIGN
AIM = Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula (S = I/y) where, `
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
DEFINITIONS:
- SECTION MODULUS = Geometric constraint of an element measured with ratio of moment of inertia in its neutral axis to the distance between neutral axis to its outermost end.
- MOMENT OF INERTIA = A quantitative measure of a body measured with the product of mass of the section to square the distance between reference axis and centroid. It is also known as Mass Moment of inertia, Angular Mass, Rotational inertia, etc.
CALCULATIONS:

CONDITION BEFORE AFTER MOI (I) 0.006 kg m^2 0.082kg m^2 DISTANCE (Y) 880.21 / 2 = 440.105 mm 440.105 mm SECTION MODULUS (S) 1.36 *10^-5 0.00186
-
CHANGES MADE TO IMPROVE THE MOMENT OF INERTIA:
- The intersection of Hood inner panel had offsetted to 0.5mm inwards.
- Increased fillet values on Inner panel and newly added for some curves.

- MOMENT OF INERTIA BEFORE MODIFICATION

- MOMENT OF INERTIA AFTER MODIFICATION

RESULT
- Sectional modulus of the component / assmbly had improved i.e., the strength has increased.
NOTE
- The steps followed are created in a geometrical set named Section Modulus and is placed with the Hood Outer Panel Workbench.
- Result of MOI is attatched in the file submitted below, includes report exported from analysis done with CATIA V5, CAT file in part and product mode.
