Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Aim: This report aims to study the section modulus of the selected section from the Hood design and calculate its value.

Introduction: The section modulus is a mechanical property used to measure the resistance of a structural member, such as a beam or column, to bending. It quantifies the distribution of material around the neutral axis, providing valuable information about the structural integrity and strength of the section. Calculation of Section Modulus The section modulus (Z) can be calculated using the formula:

Z = (I / y)

Where:

Z = Section modulus

I = Moment of inertia about the neutral axis

y = Distance from the neutral axis to the outermost point of the section

Calculation of Section Modulus:-

Section Modulus for Frontal Impact:

From Above:

Imax =9.003736 x 107 mm4

Imin =2.654455 x 105 mm4

Y = 877.9168 / 2

= 438.9584mm

Zmax = Imax / y

=9.003736 x 107 / 438.9584

=2.05115 x 103 mm3

Zmax = Imax / y

=2.654455 x 105 / 438.9584

=6.1471 x 103 mm3

Conclusion: The section modulus is a fundamental parameter used to evaluate the resistance of a structural member to bending. By calculating the section modulus, we can assess the structural integrity and stren0th of the section, ensuring it can withstand applied loads and moments.From above calculation the Section Modulus of the hood is from 2.05115 x 103 mm3 to 6.1471 x 103 mm3
