Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM:

To calculate the section modulus of the hood and optimize the design to have an improved section modulus.

SECTION MODULUS:

Section Modulus is a geometric property used to calculate the bending stresses in a structural member.
Mathematically,
It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis and to the distance of the extreme layer from the neutral axis.
It is denoted by S.

S=I/Y

Here,

S = Section modulus

I= Moment of Inertia (Unit mm 4)

Y= Distance from Neutral axis to the extreme end (unit mm)

The Unit of a “section modulus” is (mm3)

DISTANCES BETWEEN THE ENDS

TOTAL DISTANCE = 876 mm

Y=438mm (DISTANCE from netrual axis to one side of the end point)

While increasing the depth , strength also increases.

CASE: 1

HERE, Section modulus

S=I/Y

Here,

S = Section modulus

I= 3.02 X 10^5 (Unit mm 4)

Y= 438 (unit mm)

The Unit of a “section modulus” is (mm3)

S = 3.02 x 10 ^5 / 438

= 689.5 mm3

CASE 2: After Optimization

Here, We increased the depth of the inner panel by 0.5 mm.

HERE, Section modulus

S=I/Y

Here,

S = Section modulus

I= 3.06 X 10^5 (Unit mm 4)

Y= 438 (unit mm)

The Unit of a “section modulus” is (mm3)

S = 3.065 x 10 ^5 / 438

=700 mm3

CONCLUSION:

  • After the calculations of the above 2 cases, the section modulus of an S1 and S2 difference is 11.5mm3. The section modulus value of Case 2 is higher than Case 1.
  • As we increase the section area, the moment of inertia & section modulus increase, and strength also increases.

CASE 2 is better than CASE 1.
