Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION 1:

Using intersection curve and a datum plane, a section is generated and moment of inertia is calculated as shown below:

The distance between ends is measured as 876.81mm. Therefore distance from neutral axis y= 876.81/2= 438.405mm

Section Modulus for first section is S=I/y = 4.869* (10^6) / 438.405 = 11106.169 mm^3 taking the maximum value of MOI.

Section Modulus for first section is S=I/y = 1.496* (10^6) / 438.405 = 3412.37 mm^3 taking the minimum value of MOI.

SECTION 2:

The spline was readjusted to take maximum possible area inside. Also selection of curves was done such a way that outermost curves was taken to include maximum possible area. As the area increases, section modulus value should also increase. Though the MOI value didn't increased drastically, still the alterations produced a good amount of increment in MOI value.

Section Modulus for first section is S=I/y = 4.904* (10^6) / 438.405 = 11186 mm^3 taking the maximum value of MOI.

Section Modulus for first section is S=I/y = 1.568* (10^6) / 438.405 = 3576.6 mm^3 taking the minimum value of MOI.

There is an increase of 164 mm^3 in section modulus in case 2 than case 1.
