Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim - To calculate and improve the section modulus of hood useing Nx cad software
Objective -1) know about applications and importance of section modulus .
2) To get insight for improvement of section modulus .
3) Calculate the section modulus
Section modulus of inertia .
Section modulus of inertia is the geometric property that is used to design beams and flexural members .
we have to design the components that should with stand higher bending stress
The relation between bending moment is given by beding equation.

where ,
M- bending moment in N-m
I- Area modulus of inertia in mm^4
Y- tip distance from neutral axis in mm
E - modulus of elasticity N/mm^2
R- radius of curvature of beam.
From the above equation by considering relation between first two ratios we get .

from the above equation I/Y is the section modulus that is multiplied with bending stress.
Higher the section modulus higher is the strength of component .
Calculation of moment of inertia (I) by useing nx cad
- Thicken the parts and Create a plane through curve with percentage arc length 50% on the body

- Use intersersection command but ensure the tangent face selection and entire assembly work bench is active . select datum plane as set 1 and rest body as set 2 in intersection tool box

- Intersection curve is created as below

- Now project the curve on created datum plane and sketch the dis continuties with studio splin with single face on

- search section inertia analysis and select the cuve

- We will get the moment of inertia

7. measure the thistance of component along tips by measure tool which is in analysis tool bar .
8. Use the formula I/Y =Z
Y= tip distance
thus we have calculated the section modulus z
Observations
case 1.
actual analysis of the existing cross section
M-1.4226*10^4 mm^4
Y= 879.64/2
= 439.82

Section modulus of existing section =32.34 mm^3
Case 2. Improvement in existing section modulus of inertia
Increaseing in gap between hood inner and outer panel by 0.8 mm increased the section modulus of inertia by 2.90%
Conclusion -
Thus we have calculated the section moment of inertia by useing Nx cad and found out that by increaseing cross section we will increase the section modulus .
