Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
To find section modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS
The section is a geometric property of a cross-section that is commonly used in structural engineering to analyze the bending behaviour of beams and other structural members.It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of the cross-section about a particular axis to the distance from that axis to the extreme fiber.
The section modulus is a mesure of a cross-sections resistance to bending. A higher section modulus indicates a greater resistance to a bending and a stiffer cross-section, while a lower section modulus indicates a weaker cross-section that is more prone to bending.
The section modulus is commonly denoted by the symbol "S" and is typically calculated for different axes of a cross-section, such as the x-axis,y-axis . The section modulus for a particular axis is calculated using the following formula:
S=I/Y
Where,
s: Section modulus
I: Moment of the inertia
C: Distance between the neutral axis and extreme and of the object
The section modulus is used in various structural engineering calculations, such as determining the maximum bending moment that a beam can resist without exceeding its allowable stress, calculating the deflection of a beam under load and analyzing the stability and buckling behaviour of colums and slender members.
In summary, the section modulus is a geometric property the quantifies a cross sections resistance to bending and is used in structural engineering to analyze the behaviour of beams and other structural memebrs under bending loads. It is calculated as the ratio of the moment of inertia of the cross-section to the distance from the axis of the interest to the extreme fiber.
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION
The cross section of the hood is required for studying the section modulus .I used an intersecting curve to build a cross section for this

CASE 1

Here
Moment of interia I(max) = 9.055690886e+07[mm^4]
Moment of interia I(min) = 2.776284580e+05[mm^4]
Y=Total length /2
=878/2
=439mm
S=I/y
=2.776284580*10^5/439
=632.2254mm^3
CASE 2
BY increasing the depth of the inner panel by 0.5mm

I (min)=2.821434337e+05[mm^4]
S=I/Y
=2.821434337e+05[mm^4]/436
=645.94630mm^3
Conclusion
Hence the difference in moment of interia can be seen here and change in section modulus can be noticed by changing the design
