Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM:

Using the section create the section modulus for the hood panel and compare the results with different sections that increases strength.

PROCEDURE:

1.Create the intersection for the Plane YZ and Hood inner and outer panel and extract the outer lines using Multiple extract option and then create a line where there is gap in inner panel and join them.

2.Join the two intersections with lines as shown.

3.Using the Fill command create a surface by selecting the closed curve.Using the Measure inertia command select the Measure inertia 2D option and select the surface.

4.M1 will be the Minimum inertia and M2 will be the Maximum inertia of the section.

5.From the section modulus formula S=I/y; where S-section modulus,I-moment of inertia (consider the minimum inertia) and y-distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

Case1.Inner panel at 0mm ; M1=1.25e-006m4 M2=1.522e-004m4 => M1=1.25 x 10^6mm4 M2=1.522 x 10^4mm4 (Convert m4 to mm4) ; y=478.014/2 = 239.00

S=(1.25 x 10^6mm4/239.007mm) => S=5.229 x 10^15mm3

Case2.Inner panel at 0.5mm downwards ; M1=1.305e-006m4 M2=1.574e-004m4 => M1=1.305 x 10^6mm4 M2=1.574 x 10^4mm4 Main line-Black;Offset line-Yellow

S=(1.305 x 10^6mm4/239.007mm) => S=5.46 x 10^14mm3

Case3.Inner panel at 0.94mm downwards ; M1=1.353e-006m4 M2=1.62e-004m4 => M1=1.353 x 10^6mm4 M2=1.62 x 10^4mm4 Main line-Black;Offset line-Yellow

S=(1.36 x 10^6mm4/239.007mm) => S=5.64 x 10^15mm3

When compared to case 1 and case 2 , case 1 has more section modulus and when compared to case 3 it has more section modulus than case 1 ude to increase in offset distance.

RESULT:

The new section modulus with increased strength will be case 3.
