Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Hood Design Section Modulus;
Section modulus is to find the geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design.It is used to find out the strength of the hood and increase its strength.
Section modulus (S) = I/Y
I = Moment of inertia of structure.
Y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Section modulus-1;

Maximum moment of inertia(max) = 4.885951709e+06[mm^4]
Minimum moment of inertia(min) = 1.417298010e+04[mm^4]
The total distance of the hood Y = 880.1915 mm
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (880.1915/2) = 440.096 mm
To find section modulus of HOOD section, we have to calculate
1)Section modulus(S):-I/Y=4.885951709e+06[mm^4]/440.096 mm
=11.08X103mm3(Maximum strength).
2) Section modulus(S):-I/Y=1.417298010e+04[mm^4]/ 440.096 mm
=0.032x103mm3(minimum strength).
Section modulus-2;
I have increased the distance between outer and inner panel by 3mm compared to the existing one.

Maximum moment of inertia(max)= 4.874329731e+06[mm^4]
Minimum moment of inertia(min) = 1.565969350e+04[mm^4] =
To find section modulus of new HOOD section, we have to calculate
1)Section modulus(S):-I/Y=4.874329731e+06[mm^4]/440.096 mm
=11.075X103mm3(Maximum strength).
2) Section modulus(S):-I/Y= 1.565969350e+04[mm^4]/ 440.096 mm
=0.0358x103mm3(minimum strength).
From the above calculations, I got an improvement in section modulus for about 0.0358x103 mm3
so that I also made an improvement in resistance to bending of my HOOD design.
