Section Modulus calculation and optimization
- Section Modulus :
- It is the ratio of total moment resist by section to distance between neutral axis to extreme layer.
- It give us idea about load carrying capacity of structure.
- As increase the Section Modulus of structure, total moment resistance also will be increasing, hence load carrying capacity increases.
- Mathematically
- S = I / y
- Where,
- S = Section Modulus
- I = Moment of Inertia ( mm^4 )
- y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object ( mm )
- Unit : mm^3 or cm^3 or m^3
- But generally mm^3 is preferred majorly in industries.
- Section Modulus of Hood :
- For calculate the Section Modulus of our designed Hood, we need the values of 'I' and 'y'.
- To find this values, we have to take intersection of our Hood from center area axis, means a plane where its divides equally both sides.

- In this Hood YZ plane divides equally, So now we have to use Intersection tool.
- Keep first element as YZ plane and in second element select multiple elements as, Inner and Outer Panel.
- So, in this way we get intersections. For calculate the Section Modulus, we need out side edges of both Panel.

- So by using Multi-Extraction tool we can get it, which is shown in above image.
- For measure the Inertia, we need Surface.

- By using Fill tool, we will get surface as shown in above image.
- Now, we can measure the Ineratia, there is tool in Catia having icon like yellow cylinder.
- This tool can measure Inertia for 2D as well as 3D.

- So, here we have select Measure Inertia 2D and click on our surface. So information box will get appear as shown in above image.
- We can see the values of M1 = 4.70777e-007 m^4 and M2 = 1.407e-004 m^4 from that box.
- M1 is for minimum value of Inertia and M2 is for maximum value of Inertia.
- We required value of M1 for our calculation, here its given in terms of m^4. So we have to convert it into mm^4.
- So, M1 = 470777 mm^4. There is a option of Export, by click on it we get all value details in a Notepad file.

- We have the value of Inertia, now we have to get the value of 'y', which is the distance between Neutral Axis to the Extreme edge point of the hood.
- As shown in above image, we can use Position Sketch and make extreme points and measure the distance between them.
- Here we have got the value of y = 485.127 / 2 = 242.56 mm.
- Now we have both the values of I and y. So we can now calculate value of Section Modulus of Hood.
- S = 470777 / 242.56
- S = 1940.87 mm^3.
- Now, for find more strength of hood, we can make new Section Modulus for Hood by changing the distance between Outer and Inner Panel of Hood.
- Initially, we have created an offset curve of Inner panel by using Parallel Curve tool as 0.6 mm downward distance.
- Then similarly as previous join curve, we have to join this new curve and make surface from it by using Fill tool.

- Now, we have to measure the Inertia by using this new surface.
- As shown in above image, we have get the value of M1 = 5.0561e-007 m^4.
- Value of y remain same, so now we can calculate Section Modulus of this change.
- S = 505610 / 242.56
- S = 2084.47 mm^3.
- Now we are further increasing the distance of Inner Panel (outer edge) from outer edge of Outer Panel by 0.8 mm.

- By creating surface for change curve, we have to measure value of Inertia for it.
- As shown in above image we get the value of M1 = 5.17626e-007 m^4 .
- S = 517626 / 242.56
- S = 2134 mm^3 .
- Now, further increasing the distance of Inner Panel (outer edge) from outer edge of Outer Panel by 0.9 mm .

- By creating surface for change curve, we have to measure value of Inertia for it.
- As shown in above image we get the value of M1 = 5.23711e-007 m^4 .
- S = 523711 / 242.56
- S = 2159.10 mm^3 .
- Now, further increasing the distance of Inner Panel (outer edge) from outer edge of Outer Panel by 1.0 mm .

- By creating surface for change curve, we have to measure value of Inertia for it.
- As shown in above image we get the value of M1 = 5.29848e-007 m^4 .
- S = 529848 / 242.56
- S = 2184.40 mm^3 .
- Now, further increasing the distance of Inner Panel (outer edge) from outer edge of Outer Panel by 1.2 mm .

- By creating surface for change curve, we have to measure value of Inertia for it.
- As shown in above image we get the value of M1 = 5.42276e-007 m^4 .
- S = 542276 / 242.56
- S = 2235.64 mm^3 .
- Hence, we have get new values of Section Modulus for Hood by changing the distance between outer edge of Outer Panel and outer edge of Inner Panel.
- Here we have get the value of Section Modulus is S = 2235.64 mm^3 by changing the distance of Inner Panel (outer edge) from outer edge of Outer Panel by 1.2 mm .
- Hence from above all calculations, we have observed that, value of Section Modulus increases. So simultaneously load carrying capacity of Hood will get increases.
