1) What are HVAC systems? Why are they essential in modeling of buildings

Ans. HVAC systems represent Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning

  • And HVAC systems are, everything from air conditioner at home to the large systems used in industrial buildings and apartment blocks. A good HVAC system means, they give thermal control and indoor comfort, and is meant using the principles of thermodynamics, hydraulics , and transfer of heat transfer.
  • The big air conditioner boxes that we see on top of apartment blocks or offices are examples of HVAC systems. They’re typically placed in large industrial buildings, skyscrapers, apartment blocks, and large interior environments. They’re obviously essential components of environment where there are health regulations like temperature and humidity be kept at certain levels, using air taken from outside.
  • But heating and cooling systems we use in our home are also HVAC systems. They may come under different form, but many of the fundamental principles determine how they operate, as well as their efficiency, crosses over from the smallest of personal devices right through to the biggest commercial installations.
  • The appropriate application of Heating, Ventilation, and Air-conditioning (HVAC) systems is key to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Significant advances have been made in the past decades on model development to provide better control over the energy consumption of system components to ensure a satisfactory interior environment in regard of thermal comfort and indoor air quality. Yet it is a challenge to select and implement the best-suited modeling technique for improving the control strategy of HVAC systems.
  • HVAC systems not only control overall climate in the building, but also improve the air quality. They also make adjustments based on the outside temperature.

2) From week 7 assignment, based on the building designed use the same revit file to design a HVAC system for each floor to cover the topics included in class

  1. Typical HVAC unit includes Distribution center
  2. Collector
  3. Ducts
  4. Bowler

Based on the layout choose appropriate ducts and elevation using property browser and assign the components to appropriate groups to complete modelling of HVAC unit

Ans.

AIM : To design a HVAC system for each floor and to assign the components to appropriate groups to complete modelling of HVAC unit

TOOLS USED :

  • New
  • Collaborate
  • Manage links
  • Coordinates
  • Systems
  • Duct

PROCEDURE :

  • Open revit and open a new project file choosing Mechanical template

  • Save the project file with any name
  • Go to collaborate tab to do the collaboration by choosing collaborate command

  • Draw longitudinal and transverse grids using grids command

  • Specify the coordinates of both grids as 0'0"

  • Click on manage link to link architectural model file

  • Relocate the project to overlap grids

  • Go to system tab and click on air terminal tool and select the type of supply and return diffuser

  • Place them at required locations

  • Select the mechanical equipment and place the air handling unit at proper location

  • Now select all the elements in that room and click on duct tool then select layout to ensure that it is a part of system and click on finish command

  • In this way, we can do it for other rooms also

RESULT : A HVAC system is designed and connected by assigning the components to appropriate groups

3) Use the add-ins tab to load plug-ins for robot structural analysis to your Revit software

Ans.

Open revit, we can see shopping cart icon on top right side which is an autodesk app store, click on it. Now type structural analysis toolkit in serach tab to search. Choose the required version and install the file.

Then robot structural analysis will be added.

Otherwise, we can get this product through website. We have to sign in and then search for robot structural analysis product and click to install it with required version.

4) Why do we need to assess buildings /analyze while modeling elements ? Does design affect modeling in anyways ?

Ans.

A structure refers to a body or system of connected parts which support a load. Structural analysis means the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures and their components. Structures like buildings subject to this type of analysis include all that must withstand loads. The results of the analysis are accustomed to verify a structure's fitness to be used . Structural analysis is therefore a key part of design of structures.

Modelling involves many important factors which are important for a building to withstand gravitational loads, are sensibly vulnerable if subjected to extraordinary actions such as earthquakes, exhibiting cracks even for events of moderate intensity compared to other structural typologies like as concrete or steel buildings.

Designers need to compare lots of different drawings to ensure everything matches up. Even the smallest of inconsistencies may damage the project. One missed piece of information may not show up at the design stage. However, it will certainly have an effect when you come to build your structure. We have to do modelling as per design. So, design definitely affect modelling.

5) From the structural model developed in week 6 and 7, export the complete analytical model to robot structural analysis.
a. List your assumptions on what boundary conditions will be realistic for analysis approach
b. Use the design standards to decide what loads must be applied to floorings based on the type of structure decided
c. List the load combinations and include them in analysis model
d. Analyze the building and report the following results
i. Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations
e. After analysis , do you think you have a better approach or idea in modeling structural members ?

Ans. a) Assumptions :-

  • A place where either the external force or the displacements are known at the beginning of analysis is boundary condition.
  • To solve any structural analysis problem, every location on the boundary of a structure must have either known force or known displacement.
  • The known force or the known displacement may have some magnitude or it may be zero
  • Boundary conditions are expressed in terms of applicable degrees of freedom.
  • The most common displacement boundary conditions in structural analysis are those that restrain the movement of the structure in one or more degrees of freedom at a point.

b) Loads which must be applied to floorings :-

  1. Dead load
  2. Live load
  3. Earthquake load

c) Load combinations :-

  • 1.5 DL + 1.5 LL
  • 1 DL +- 1.5 LL

AIM : To include load combinations to the model

TOOLS USED :

  • Manage
  • Structural settings
  • Analyze
  • Boundary condition
  • Type of load

PROCEDURE :

  • Open the structural model
  • Go to 3D view which is analytical
  • Go to manage tab, click on structural settings and add required load combinations and click ok
  • Go to analyze tab, click on boundary condition and select type of load such as point load, line load or area load
  • Load will be applied

RESULT : Point loads are applied

d) After analysing the building, results i got :-

e) After analysis, i definitely think that i have a better approach in modelling structural members.

6) What is energy analysis and why do we need to consider it while modeling in Revit ?

How does the factor of sustainability improve the quality of your design ?

Ans.

Energy analysis can provide information on the amount of energy input/output of a system. It is a common tool to investigate a system's performance and can be used to evaluate energy/fuel use and energy efficiency.

Energy simulation can help us to analyze the movement of energy in and out through the rooms and volumes in a building model. This information can help designers to make better informed, cost-effective decisions which improve the performance and reduce the environmental impact of buildings.

Sustainable design and building practices not only reduce the negative effects on the environment but they also provide benefits with regard to economics, productivity and enhanced public relation.

Environmentally sustainable buildings also have significant operational cost saving reducing energy required to heat and cool the building, more efficient lighting systems and optimize the economic performance.

Considering a sustainable design philosophy encourages decisions at each phase of the design process that will reduce negative impacts on the environment and the health of the occupants, without compromising the bottom line.
