Radar Mast & Final Assembly of Yacht

PREDATOR YACHT

Aim and Objective:

The objective is to design and assemble various parts of the yacht using Solidworks.

Introduction:

The yacht includes both part modelling and surface modelling.

The surface modelling is used up to 90% in the modelling of various parts of the yacht.

Parts to be modelled:

  • Propeller
  • Radar
  • Hull
  • Garage Door
  • Front seat
  • Middle Seat
  • Rear Seat
  • Superstructure
  • Radarmast

1] PROPELLER :

A propeller is a strong rotating fan-like structure that is used to propel the yacht by using the power generated and transmitted by the main engine of the Yacht. The Yacht has three propellers for acquiring good speed as it is known for.

Commands used in Propeller:

  • Sketch
  • Revolve
  • Lofted Base
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Circular Pattern

Sketch:

The sketch is a 2D representation of a particular model from different views such as front view, side view, top view...

Revolve:

Revolve is used to create a revolved 3D model using a sketch profile using an axis of rotation. The profile was created with revolution up to a 360 degree axis of rotation.

Lofted Base:

Creates a 3D solid by specifying a series of cross-sections. The cross-sections define the shape of the resulting solid. You must specify at least two cross-sections. Loft cross-sections can be open or closed, planer or non-planer and can also be the edge of sub-objects.

Extrude Cut:

The extrude cut is used to remove unwanted material from the solid model as per the sketch defined. Based on the sketch the material is removed from the component.

Fillet:

The fillet is used to create round faces in the interior or exterior corners of the part. The fillet distributes stresses uniformly along with the corners.

Circular Pattern:

A circular pattern is used to create a solid feature in a circular direction with respect to the reference axis of rotation up to user-defined instances.

2] RADAR:

Radar is a detection device which is used to detect objects and their position relative to their current location.

Commands used in Radar:

  • Sketch
  • Boss Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Cut Extrude
  • Sketch Pattern
  • Mirror
  • Split Line

Boss Extrude:

The Extrude command is used to create a solid extrusion based on the selected sketch or contours. The extrusion is made in either a positive or negative direction as required.

Mirror:

The mirror command is used to create a replica of the body.

Sketch Pattern:

The sketch pattern is used to create a similar sketch profile up to user-defined instances based on some reference edges.

Split Line:

The split line is used to project an entity.

3] HULL:

A Hull is a watertight body of the yacht. The hull may open at the top. A top deck may be a deckhouse and other superstructures such as a funnel.

Commands used in Hull:

  • Sketch
  • Project Curve
  • Loft Surface
  • Fill Surface
  • Surface Extrude
  • Surface Trim
  • Surface Extend
  • Shell
  • Boss Extrude
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Sweep
  • Plane
  • Dome
  • Helix
  • Linear Pattern
  • Delete Face
  • Curve
  • Revolve
  • Combine

Fill Surface:

Creates a surface patch within the boundary defined by existing model edges, sketches and curves.

Surface Extrude:

Creates an extruded surface based on some reference sketches.

Surface Trim:

It is used to trim the surfaces when one surface intersects with another.

Surface Extend:

Extend the edge, multiple edges or faces on a surface based on end condition.

Chamfer:

It is used to create a bevelled feature on the selected edge face and vertex according to an angle.

Dome:

Dome is an architectural hemisphere that evolved from the arch.

Delete Face:

The command is used to delete the unnecessary faces.

Combine:

A combined feature is used to merge two or more solids into a single solid body.

4] GARAGE DOOR:

A garage door is a large door on a garage that opens either manually or automatically. The garage door is frequently large enough to accommodate automobiles and other vehicles.

Commands used in Garage Door:

  • Sketch
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Mirror

5] FRONT SEAT:

6] MIDDLE SEAT:

7] REAR SEAT:

8] SUPERSTRUCTURE:

A Superstructure is an extended construction of any building or platform that rises above the rest of the building or platform in a distinct manner. Superstructure means to add construction to an already existing structure. In ships, this is the name given to the part of the ship that emerges from the deck.

Commands used to create superstructure:

  • Sketch
  • Surface Extrude
  • Ruled Surface
  • Surface Sweep
  • Knit Surface
  • Cut Extrude
  • Loft Surface
  • Extrude Thin
  • Chamfer
  • Fillet
  • Mirror
  • Combine
  • Sweep
  • Thicken Surface
  • Dome
  • Combine

9] RADAR MAST:

Radarmast is amodern ferry. Navigation mast supporting the ship radar at front containers holding inflatable lifeboats on side of the ocean. Radar and other instruments are on the top of the ship.

The radar mast consists of a housing that accommodates all major radars and antennas of a naval vessel. It will change the appearance of naval vessels.

Commands used to create Radarmast:

  • Sketch
  • Boss Extrude
  • Revolve Thin
  • Sweep
  • Dome
  • Shell
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Mirror

ASSEMBLY OF YACHT :

All the modelled parts are inserted into the assembly.

Since the parts are created based on the reference with the deck surface the parts are automatically fixed above the deck surface while the part is inserted in the assembly environment.

So to start the assembly of the yacht first part being inserted will be the hull which has the deck surface.

The propeller, garage door and radar are not fully fixed since they have to rotate and move respectively.

So for these parts, the mates are manually defined to allow them to move on a particular axis only.

CONCLUSION:

Thus the various parts of the yacht are modelled and assembled together using Solidworks.

THE OUTCOME OF THE COURSE:

Proper use of various surface modelling tools in the surface modelling environment.

Learned how to surface model apart, and assemble its various parts with reference to some surfaces...
