Surface Modelling of Sunseeker Predator 108 Yacht in SolidWorks

Title:

Surface Modelling of Sunseeker Predator 108 Yacht in SolidWorks

Objective:

  • To model various parts of Sunseeker Predator Yacht individually in part files
  • To assembly all the parts with appropriate mate conditions in the assembly file
  • To produce renders of the Yacht parts and assembly using appropriate scene, light, view setup and other settings using Photoview 360

Introduction:

Sunseeker Predator 108 is a 32.92 m / 108′1″ luxury motor yacht. It was built by Sunseeker in 2007. With a beam of 6.3 m and a draft of 1.58 m, it has a fibreglass hull. It is powered by MTU engines of 2000 hp each giving it a maximum speed of 45 knots and a cruising speed of 35 knots. The motor yacht can accommodate guests in 4 cabins with an interior design by Sunseeker.
The yacht is built in SolidWorks using surface modelling tools.
  • Surface Extrude: This tool does not require a closed sketch for extrusion. Any open profile can be extruded in a defined direction for a defined distance.
  • Surface Loft: This tool is used when the two ends of the surface have different profiles. Additionally, guide curves can be selected to describe the path along with surface is created between the two profiles.
  • Rules Surface: It creates a surface by extending an existing edge in a specified direction for a given distance. Various direction options used are:
    • Tangent to surface: It extends the surface edge in a way that the new surface is tangent to the existing surface.
    • Normal to surface: This option makes the new surface perpendicular to the existing surface
    • Tapered to vector: This option tapers the new surface or inclines it by a given angle to the specified vector.
  • Surface Fill: It is used to construct a surface patch with any number of given sides. This creates a new surface within a defined boundary described by edges, sketches or curves.
  • Surface Extend: It is used to extend the already existing surface by selecting the surface or the edges. The extension can be done for a given distance or by defining a vertex or surface up to which extension needs to be done. The extension types are:
    • Same surface: The extension is done according to the geometry of the surface
    • Linear: The extension is tangential to the selected edge
  • Surface Sweep: It creates a new surface by extending the profile along the defined path which could be a sketch, curve or edge.

The initial step in every part modelling is the blueprint setup. Blueprint setup is a set of images of various views of Sunseeker Predator Yacht: Top view, Side view, Front view, Bottom view, back view that are set in appropriate planes using Sketch Tools > Sketch Pictures option. These images are made transparent and are sized according to the life-size yacht to aid in sketch creations. All the sketches used to model the surfaces are based on this blueprint setup.

Design methodology and description:

Parts:

1. Propeller

The propeller is made of a hub and blades mounted on the periphery of the hub. Propeller is mounted on the bottom rear end of the yacht. Propeller pushes the fluid thus imparting reaction force to the yacht to propel it forwards in the sea.

The process followed to model the part is shown below:

2. Radar:

Radar is used for navigating in the yacht. It is modelled as the following flowchart describes:

3. Hull:

Hull is an enclosed and watertight body of the yacht. It defines hydrostatics of the yacht such as accommodation, load-carrying capacity and stability as well as the hydrodynamics of the yacht such as speed, power, the behaviour of yacht in sea etc. Hull is enclosed on the top by deck surface. It is modelled as shown below:

4. Rear seat:

This part is used for seating purposes for the passengers at the rear end of the yacht. It is modelled as below:
