Project - Analysis of a practical automotive wiring circuit
"Analysis of a Practical Automotive wiring Circuit"
1) This is a Wiring Diagram for a vehicle electrical system likely an older car or simple utility vehicle showing the complete interconnections between elements like :
- Battery
- Starter
- Ignition Coil and Distributor
- Generator
- Lights (Headlights, parking lights, tail light, dome light)
- Horn
- Current and voltage regulator
- Ammeter
- Fuel and oil Gauge
Some important observations:
- Foot Selector switch : It is used to toggle between high and low beam
- Current and voltage regulator : Controls charging from the generator
- Junction Block: It is used for wiring branching for lights and horns
- Dome light switch and light switch : Handle internal and external light
- Ignition switch : Controls power to ignition and starter
- Breakers and fuses : Protect circuits from overload.
It is a positive ground system common in older vehicles meaning the positive terminal of the battery is connected to vehicle chassis.
2) Purpose and working of any three elements from the circuit diagram are
A) Generator( Alternator) :
- Purpose : Charges the battery and supplies current to the electrical system when the engine is running
- Working: It converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy using electromagnetic induction.
B) Battery :
- Purpose: It provides electrical energy to start the engine and operate accessories when the engine is off.
- Working: It stores electrical energy in chemical form and supplies DC Power.
C) Ignition Coil :
- Purpose: It steps up the battery voltage (12V) to a very high voltage (about 20,000v-40,000v) needed for spark plug ignition
- Working : It works as transformer. Low voltage input at the primary winding is induced into a high voltage at the secondary winding.
3) If the total load is 10A from the battery we have to find the fuse rating, Normally the fuse rating should be about 125% of the full load current (to avoid nuisance tripping but protect during faults)
Fuse Rating = 10A X 1.25 = 12.5A
Recommended fuse rating = 15A taking the next standard fuse size.
4) If 500W is the load and battery voltage is 12V
Current Drawn = Power/ Voltage = 500W/12V = 41.67A
Suppose backup needed =1 hour minimum capacity in Ah=current * time
so, capacity = 41.67 x 1 = 41.67Ah
We should pick up a slightly higher standard size for safe
Battery recommended Capacity = 50Ah,12V
5) Elements connected in parallel :
Left and Right Headlights (Scaled Beams)
Horn and Parking Lamps (Indirectly after the junction block)
Its Parallel so as to ensure independent operation if any one element like headlight fails other continues to work also each component gets the same voltage (12V) across it .
6) Elements connected in series :
Ignition switch and Ignition coil
Stop Light and Tail Light
Its in series so as to ensure controlled operation eg ignition coil is energized only when ignition switch is on.
In series current must pass through both elements -useful for control logic (one must enable the other).
