Project 2_Design & Analysis of a Hostel building at Guwahati, Assam
In this project, participants will get to experience the entire design process from modelling, analysis, design, and preparation of construction drawings. The architectural drawings of a G+3 RCC building is provided. The following information on the building is to be used:
- Location – Guwahati, Assam
- Function – Hostel block in an academic institute
The walls will be made of AAC blocks. Other loadings are to be calculated as per the architectural drawings.
The buildings rests on type 3 soil. Piles of length 10 meters and 500 mm diameter with a load-carrying capacity of 280 KN is to be used.
The ground floor level will be at a height of 2 meters above the existing site level to avoid floodwater enter the building.
M25 grade of concrete with Fe500 for longitudinal reinforcement and Fe 415 for shear reinforcement is to be used.
The following design IS codes will be required for reference:
- IS 875 part 1
- IS 875 part 2
- IS 13920
- IS 1893
- IS 2911 part 2
- IS 456
- SP 34
Students will have to produce the following:
- Etabs model for the two blocks on either side of the expansion gap
- Foundation details illustrating the pile & pile cap reinforcement
- Tie beam details connecting the pile caps
- Column reinforcement
- Framing plan for typical floor
- Beam reinforcements for ground floor.
AIM
To provide the analysis in ETABS and SAFE for the given hostel building.
PROCEDURE
STEP1
- Open the Given Building Model G+3 ( HOSTEL BUILDING ) in ETABS.
- Choose metric system and code details.
- Edit the Grid and Storey of Appropriate given dimensions.

STEP 2
- Then , to add the building materials of column, M25 & Rebar 500, Rebar 415.

STEP 3
- After we need to add the section properties of Column, Beam and slab
- The beam size is B 250mm x 500mm and B300 x 500mm.
- The column size is C 450mm x 750mm.
- The slab thickness is 150mm in floor area and staircase area is 200mm thickness.

STEP 4
- After that we added the material, let we do Draw the Column, beam and slab as considered dimensions.

STEP 5
- Go to base plan for to add the joint of all base columns
- Here, we selected to Pinned joints ( all direction ).
STEP 6
- The most important things of Design to add the load data of model.
- For we take reference of IS 13920 and IS 1893.
- DEFINE > Load patterns > add load of DEAD, LIVE , FINISHES and Earthquake in X positive & negative, Earthquake in Y positive & negative.

STEP 7
- FOR load cases, as per IS 875 Part 2, we found the Live Load of hostel building is 2 KN.
- Brickwall load as 3.5 KN and finishing load as 1.2KN.
- As per IS 1893:2016, For the Given model of GUWAHATI , Assam of Zone factor is 5th @ 0.36.
- The soil type is III.

STEP 8
- To Assign the Mass source Data.

STEP 9
- To Define the Load Combination @ all categories.
- Define > load combination > modify.

STEP 10
- To assign the Diaphgram of the slab.
- select all slab and then Assign > shell > Diapghragm > D1 > Apply.

STEP 11
- After we Run the analysis.
- For we getting all deformation details, Mode shapes, etc.,

STEP 12
- Then, to design the frame section.
- we need to find the reinforcement details of Beam and Column
- As reference of IS 13920.

Step 13
- Then, we go to base plan and save at Safe file for further step of designing the Foundation.

Step 14
- To open the Safe software.
- To open the Etab file in Safe for designing the Pile foundation.
- Soil type is 3.
- Pile Diameter is 500mm.
- Pile length is 10 meter.
- Load carrying capacity = 280KN.

STEP 15
- Then, we need to add the material properties.
- Define > material > add.
- The material is Concrete & Rebar 500.

STEP 16
- And also need to Add the Slab properties for Footing, column, Pile cap and Pile_500.
STEP 17
- To draw the Pile cap @ appropriate material consideration @ all column base.
- Then , to draw piles_500 and length of 10 meter.
- finally, we layed the column of central point @ Grid centroidal.

STEP 18
- Then, we need to add Spring Constant value @ all pile centroidal.
- Assign > Support load > point Spring.

Step 19
- To check load combination and SLS as well to add the combos.

STEP 20
- Check the model and Run the Analysis.
- we get Displacement value, punching shear value and Reaction forces on foundation.

Step 21
- After that, we Design the Foundation for getting the Reinforcement details.

Step 22
- Typical Structural view of Ground floor
