- Span of bridge is 40 m
- Width of bridge is 10.5 m
- The pier of size is 1.2 x 1.2 m
- The girder size is 1.6 x 2 m
- Thickness of flange and web is 0.3m
- Cr = 0.4, Cva = 3
- Storm elevation is 8.5 m
Calculation :
- Water current forces

Design speed of vehicle = 50 km/hour
Radius of curvature = 2 m
Live load , W = 70 KN
Centrifugal force = ( W x V2 ) / (127 x R )
= ( 70 x 502 ) / ( 127 x 2 )
Centrifugal force = 729.16 KN
- Wave force
Δ Zh = ηmax – centroid of girder

Δ Zh = 2.2 m.
Δ Zv = ηmax - elevation of bottom deck
= 3 – 1.5
Δ Zv = 1.5 m
Number of girder , N = 4
Vertical load, Fv = r x Δ Zv x Av
= 5 x 1.5 x ( 105 x ( 1.6/2))
Fv = 63 KN
Horizontal load, Fh = r x Δ Zh x Ah

Fh = 1320 KN
Max vertical load , Fv max = Cva x Fv

Fv max = 189 KN
Max horizontal load , Fh max =[ 1 + Cr ( N – 1 ) ] Cva x Fh
= [ 1 + 0.4 ( 4 – 1 )] 3 x 1320
Fh max = 8712 KN
- Snow load
The snow is damped new snow = 2 KN/m3
The deck of bridge is flat with β < 30°
The depth of accumulation of snow is 1250 mm
Snow load, S° = density x area
= 2 x 1.2 x 40
Snow load, S° = 96 KN/m
Shape coefficient from I.S 875 part 4
For β < 30° , µ = 0.8
Design snow load, S = µ x S°
= 0.8 x 96
Design snow load, S = 76.8 KN/m
- Temperature load
Max temperature in location as per IRC 6 at the location is 48.4°
Min temperature in location as per IRC 6 at the location is -2.2°
Effective temperature difference = ( 48.4 – ( -2.2) ) / 2 + 10 = 35.3°
Stress due to temperature = ɑ x Δ T x E
= 11.27 x 10^-6 x 35.3 x 5000 ( 40 )0.5
Stress due to temperature = 12.58 kn/m^2
Max permissible stress = ( 2/3 ) x 0.7 x (40)0.5 = 2.92 kn/m2
Positive temperature difference
Temperature at top = 48.4°
Temperature at bottom = (2.1/17.8) x 48.4 = 5.71°
- Barge impact load
Hydrodynamic coefficient 1.25
KE = 500 x CH x W x V2
= 500 x 1.25 x 25000 x 13.852
KE = 299.7 x 107
ɑβ = 3100 x [ 1 + ( 1.3 x 10-7 x 299.7 x 107]0.5 -1)
ɑβ = 58167.95
Pβ = 6 x 106 + ( 1600 + 58167.95)
Pβ = 3.58 x 1011 N
