Project 2

1. Using MATLAB/Simulink and the drive cycle from the attached excel sheet, find-

  1. The max heat generation of the battery
  2. The SOC of the battery at 2 *104second of the battery operation

1. Find the Heat Generation of the Battery:

Given Data:

Max.Current I = -1.034

Total Time T = 0.7 sec

Entropic Factor is 2

Battery Resistance = 0.5 Ohm = 0.0005 Ohm

Solution:

Heat Generated = joule Heat + entropic Heat

Calculate the joule heat

Joule Heat Q= I^2 R.T

Joule Heat = (-1.034^2) *)0.0005 * 0.7

Joule Heat = 0.0003742046

Max Heat Generation = 2+ 0.0003742046 = 2.0003742046.

2. The SOC of the battery at 2 *104second of the battery operation

The State of Charge (SoC) is a key parameter in battery management systems used in electric vehicles scooters, energy storage systems, and other applications. It represents the remaining charge in the battery as a percentage of its full capacity much like a fuel gauge in a traditional vehicle.

Understanding SoC is critical for ensuring battery performance safety and longevity. Below is a detailed breakdown of SoC including its definition calculation methods importance and influencing factors. The SoC can be measured in different ways

Voltage Translation Method (VT)

Coulomb counting method (CC)

Combination of VT and CC

Voltage Translation Method (VT):

It is measured by Open Cricut Voltage of the battery and compared it with the Data sheet of the battery and SoC is estimated. It cannot used while the battery is in operation.

Coulomb counting method (CC):

This method involves measuring the current entering or leaving the battery over time and integrating it to calculate the charge.

Model Explanation:

Signal Builder:

The Signal Builder block allows you to create interchangeable groups of piecewise linear signal sources and use them in a model. You can quickly switch the signal groups into and out of a model to facilitate testing. In the Signal Builder window, create signals and define the output waveforms.

Power Gui:

The powergui block in Simulink is used to simulate models that contain Simscape Electrical Specialized Power Systems blocks.

Controlled Current Source:

The Controlled Current Source block converts the Simulink® input signal into an equivalent current source. The generated current is driven by the input signal of the block.

Battery:

This block can be made use to analyze charge/discharge characteristics SOC temperature effects and age equivalent of the battery system. You can extract parameters from a datasheet and give it to this battery block to check the OCV characteristics and Discharge.

Bus Selector:

The Bus Selector block extracts the elements you select by name from the input bus hierarchy. The block can output the selected elements separately or in a new virtual bus.

Scope:

The Scope allows you to adjust the amount of time and the range of input values displayed. You can move and resize the Scope window and you can modify the Scope's parameter values during the simulation.

Battery Block Parameters:

Nominal voltage (V) = 3.6 V

Rated capacity (Ah) = 3.5 Ah

Resistor Block Parameters:

Resistance (Ohms) = 2

Conclusion:

The Simulink model is built successfully and simulated as per the given data. Battery charging mode is selected in this model and observed the parameters of battery block.
