Week 4 Session 5
1. Explain the various applications of Power converters in an Electric vehicle. For Example. what type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V. Likewise come up with different applications.
Power converters are essential components of electric vehicles. They are used to convert power between different voltages and types of current (AC to DC, DC to DC, and DC to AC). This is necessary because the different components of an EV operate at different voltages and require different types of current.
APPLICATION OF POWER CONVERTERS:
DC-DC Converter: Horn
Application:
Powering the vehicle's horn, which typically operates on low voltage (less than 10V) DC power.
Converter Type:
A DC-DC converter steps down the high voltage from the vehicle's main battery (usually several hundred volts in an EV) to the low voltage required for the horn. This converter ensures the horn receives a stable and appropriate voltage.
AC to DC Conversion: Battery Charger
Application:
Charging the EV's battery from an AC power source.
Converter Type:
Onboard AC-DC converters convert alternating current from charging stations or home outlets to direct current suitable for charging the vehicle's battery. These converters are often integrated into the vehicle's charging system.
DC to AC Conversion: Inverter
Application:
Driving the electric motor that propels the vehicle.
Converter Type:
Inverters are crucial components that convert the DC power from the battery to three-phase AC power, which is used to drive the electric motor. They control the frequency and amplitude of the AC power, allowing precise control of the motor's speed and torque.
DC-DC Converter: Accessories
Application:
Powering various auxiliary systems and accessories inside the vehicle, such as lights, air conditioning, and infotainment systems.
Converter Type:
Another DC-DC converter is used to step down the high voltage from the main battery to the lower voltage levels required by these accessories. This ensures efficient power distribution and prevents unnecessary drain on the main battery.
DC to DC Conversion: Power Steering
Application:
Assisting the driver in steering the vehicle.
Converter Type:
A DC-DC converter powers the electric motor used in electric power steering systems. By adjusting the voltage and current, the converter controls the motor, providing variable assistance to the driver based on the vehicle's speed and steering input.
AC to DC Conversion: Brake Regeneration
Application:
Capturing and converting kinetic energy during braking into electrical energy to recharge the battery.
Converter Type:
During regenerative braking, the electric motor acts as a generator. An AC-DC converter rectifies the generated alternating current, turning it into direct current suitable for charging the vehicle's battery.
