Project 1 - Review of Shear & Moment Connections in RAM Connection

Portal Frame Summary

  • Span: 15 m

  • Height (eaves): Calculated from ridge height and slope

  • Ridge height: 12 m

  • Roof Slope: 4° (→ rise over run known)

  • UDL on roof beams: 10 kN/m

  • Support: Fixed

  • Material: Hot-rolled steel (E250A assumed unless specified)

  • Optimization target: 85% utilization

Design & Optimization Plan

1. Member Selection & STAAD Modeling

  • Model 2D frame in STAAD with fixed supports.

  • Apply roof UDL (consider slope projection for accurate loading).

  • Include hanger beam:

    • 3 m long, 4 m vertically from splice point

    • UDL: 5 kN/m

  • Add splice joints:

    • 6 m above column base

    • 4 m from beam-column joint

Optimize beam and column profiles using STAAD’s steel design module targeting ≤ 85% utilization.

2. Connections to Design in RAM Connection

Base Plate Connection (Fixed)

  • Design for moment + axial + shear.

  • Use AISC (or IS:800) code.

  • Check bearing pressure, anchor bolt layout, and plate thickness.

Beam-Column Moment Connection (Rigid Frame Joint)

  • Typically end plate or bolted flange plate.

  • Ensure moment transfer capability and lateral stability.

  • Check prying action and weld strength.

Beam-to-Column Shear Connection

  • Single angle or end plate shear tab type.

  • Designed for vertical shear only.

Splice Connections

  • Column splice at 6 m height:

    • Transfers axial + moment + shear (if above fixed support)

    • Use bolted flange + web plates or cover plates

  • Beam splice 4 m from joint:

    • Likely in mid-span, so shear + partial moment transfer

    • Use double web + flange plates or end plate bolted

Hanger Beam Shear Connection

  • Shear-only; typically a shear tab (single plate) or clip angle

  • Load = 5 kN/m × 3 m = 15 kN total

Connections to Include

  1. Base Plate Connection (Fixed)

  2. Beam-to-Column Moment Connection

  3. Beam-to-Column Shear Connection

  4. Column Splice Joint (6m from base)

  5. Beam Splice Joint (4m from joint)

  6. Hanger Beam Shear Connection
