Challenge

Project 1 - Meshing of Floor Panel

Aim:- Aim of this challenge is to generate the mesh for given Floor pannel, wiith required quality criteria.

Proceduce:- We will start firstly by importing the CAD file available in STEP format into ANSA. After that, we will visually inspect the model, like if the part is of sheet metal ot thin surface casting part, so that we can proceed furthur by extracting mid surface. Otherwise we will start by 3D meshing. In this case, the model is of thin surface type so, we will mesh by extarcting mid surface.

But before starting, we will check if there are any geometry errors in the model.

Fig 1: Showing the STEP file in ANSA

So, we will check for geometry errors using Geometry check command.

Fig: 2- Showing the errors found using geometry check command.

Most of the errors can be auto fixed in ANSA, and if remaining, they can be manually fixed.

Fig 3:- Showing Irregular face, which can't be fixed using auto fix.

As shown in above fig, the error can be fixed by deleting this irregular face, and replacing it with new proper face.

Fig 4: Showing new face, after replacing the irregular face.

So, after Fixing all the geometry errors, we can, proceed with the mid surface extraction command.

In this model, I'm using the skin command for mid surface extraction. This command will automatically assign the thickness of parts by internal calculations.

In this model, there is a non uniform thickness region, which will be approximated as uniform thickness for mesh generation in mid surface.

Fig 5: Non-uniform thickness region, which will be aproximated as uniform thickness region.

Fig 6: Generated mid surface at non-uniform thickness region.

Fig: 7- Showing generated mid surface with skin command

After generating mid surface, we will check again for geometrical errors in the mid surface. In this case we get some irregular faces which is fixed with same methods as discussed above, by replacing it with new regular surface.

After this we will input our required mesh parameters and quality control parameters.

Now we will switch to classical mesh, and start generating the mesh on the faces. The initial mesh can be generated with Best mesh command or mapped mesh command. In initial mesh there are some quality errors which can be fixed by using various command like- split, move, paste, smooth, regenrate or reshape command, which will helps to get proper mesh flow with required quality.

Conclusion:- So, in this challenge, we have generated the mesh of floor panel, within required quality criteria and proper mesh flow.
