Project 1
Li-ion Battery System design in EV & ES - Challenges
PROJECT 1
AIM:- Design a battery pack for a car roughly 150 Kw with 120 V. Use 3500 mAh 3.6V nominal NMC
chemistry cell.
a. Design the battery pack configuration.
b. Draw the BMS topology for this battery pack.
In this project we have to design a battery pack for a car . The battery pack Design requirements are
as follows.
- Battery capacity = 150KW
- Battery pack voltage = 120V
We need to design this battery pack from a combination of 3.6V and 3500mAh Cells.
First we will determine the number of cells in series for the battery pack to achieve a 120V
Nominal voltage.
We know.
Number of cells in series = Nominal voltage of battery pack / Indidual cell voltage
Number of cells in series = 120V / 3.6V
Number of cells in series = 33.33
Here we will choose the round off to 34
Now , the number of cells in parallel required for the battery pack to achieve a 50Ah current
can be given as.
Number of cells in parallel = Battery pack Capacity / Indidual cell capacity.
Number of cells in parallel = 1250Ah / 3.5Ah
Number of cells in parallel = 357
We will choose the round off to 35
Here we have to connect 34 cells in series and 357 in parallel to achieve the required battery pack
rating, but this battery pack will become too large, for that we will make the battery pack with 21
battery pack modules as shown below.
Each module is of 17S17P Arrangement as .

The whole battery pack arrangement comprises of 2 x 21 modules as shown below.

B.
This battery pack ia of Medium power 150Kw so, we will use Master slave Topology for the battery pack.
The master slave BMS topology for this battery is shown below.

AIM:- Build a 3S2P battery pack configuration with generic battery block using Matlab/Simulink.
The 3S2P battery configuration reffers to 3 cells in series and 2 cells in parallel this
battery pack contains 3x2 = 6 cells.
Here we will build a simulink model for 3S2P battery pack using a generic battery block of 3.7 voltage
6.5 A current and 100% SOC .
The simulink model is shown below.

Here we are using a load as 100mohm resistance.
The battery pack voltage and current drawn is as.

Also the indidual cell voltage, current and SOC is shown below.
