Photo Realistic Rendering
Modelling and Rendering of the American Chopper using Solidworks 2020.
1.Introduction:
Solidworks is the one of the leading 2D and 3D modelling software, and All in One platform developed by the Dassault Systems in the market. This CAD software helps to create models without any complexity, faster and in the cost-effective way. The Solidworks is also included with the ADD-INS like PhotoView 360, Solid modelling, Simulation, Assembly, CAM, e-drawing are the few options in it. We mainly used the assembly and the render tool in this model development. The assembly in the Solidworks will help the designers and the manufacturers to have the overview on the mating and overlapping of the different individual parts to make final model. The PhotoView 360 will bring the modelled part into the realistic appearances with the help of the material and data library, and help the designers make required changes, to make it more eye catching or more blend into the surroundings.
In this project, we mainly focused on the detailed design of American chopper parts, assembling, and rendering on the final assembly.
2. Objectives:
The main objectives of this project are:
- Designing of a chopper using various feature available in the Solidworks.
- To assembly all the individual parts to create complete American chopper.
- Rending final assembly with decals, lights, camera etc.
- To create photorealistic model and renders, using photoview 360 and Solidworks Visualize.
3. Software:
The software version used for creating Chopper:
- DASSAULT SYSTEMS SOLIDWORKS 2020.
- SOLIDWORKS Visualize professional 2020

5. List of Features in Solidworks:
2D Sketch:
The Sketch is a 2D representation of the model. These are known as entities in Solidworks. e.g.: line, rectangle, spline, circle, elliptic, arc etc.
Loft:
The Loft feature allows you to generate complex geometry. It does this by interpolating surfaces between various cross section of the model. These cross sections can be sketches, faces or edges. In the Loft interface the cross sections are considered as Loft profiles.
Dome:
This feature is majorly applied to faces to give the semi-spherical shape. Select one or more planar or non-planar faces. You can apply dome to faces whose centroid lies outside the face. This allows you to apply domes to irregularly shaped contours.
Extrude Boss/Base:
This feature is used to convert a 2D sketch into 3D model.
Extrude Cut:
This feature is used to remove materials from the 3D mode. It is just opposite to extrude boss because it cuts a sketch profile while extruding. You can cut in both directions and mainly used for creating holes, channels slots etc.
Fillet:
This feature creates a rounded internal or external face on the part. You can Fillet all the edges of a face, edges, loops etc.
Split:
This tool is used to project an entity onto other surface or curved or planar faces. You can also split faces on multiple bodies with one command.
Offset:
Offset one or more sketch entities, selected model edges or model faces by specified distance. For e.g. You can offset sketch entities such as splines or arcs, set of model edges, loops and so on. You can offset finite lines, arcs, and splines.
Revolve:
Create a 2D sketch that contains one or more profiles and a Centre line or an edge to use as the axis around which the feature revolves tools.
Dynamic Mirror:
Dynamic mirror, it is used as you sketch the entities, they are mirrored about the pre-sketched sketch entity.
Shell:
The shell feature is used to define the thickness of thin and thick shell elements.
Combine:
Combine feature is used to manually combine two bodies like add, Subtract etc....
Trim entities:
You can make, save, edit, and insert blocks for drawing items and sketch entities that you use often, such as standard notes, title blocks, labels positions and so on. You can attach blocks to geometry or to drawing views and you can insert them into sheet formats.
Patterns:
The curve driven pattern tool allows you to create Patterns along a Planar or 3D curve. You can base your pattern on an open curve or on a closed curve such as circle. In the chain part curve driven pattern is used.
Chamfer:
An Angular cut on the edge or corner in either 2D sketch or 3D model to make slope slightly rather being perfectly right angle to each other.
Linear pattern:
The linear pattern, to create multiple instances of one or more features that you can space uniformly along the linear path.
Revolve cut:
Revolve
Circular Pattern:
Circular pattern is used to create multiple instances of web shaped Spokes around the Axial of the wheel. It is also used to create holes on the brake disc and thread design all around upper surface of the tire. This feature is more helpful in create multiple instances around the axis than mirror feature, saves time and is it has more flexibility.
Move/Copy Body:
This feature is used to move/copy the body from one place to another place.
Mirror:
By Using mirror faces with a midplane selected only the chosen faces within the revolve will be mirrored. Mirroring bodies can be used whether in a single or multibody part and allows you to select solid geometry instead of the features and faces in a body. In the fork part the one part is created, and the other part is mirrored. Then the parts are manually combined.
Projected curve:
Projected curve is a kind of 3D curve which is created from the two different 2D sketches to form a single complex curve, which can be used as a reference curve to create 3D model. 3D curves can also created by the intersection of two extruded surfaces generated by creating sketches on two intersecting planes.
Sweep:
Sweep creates a base, boss, cut or surface by moving a profile (section) along a path. A sweep can be simple or complex. Sweep geometry are created by a series of intermediate sections made by replicating profile at various position along the path.
Additional parameters can be included in the sweep feature such as guide curves, profile orientation options, and twist to create a wide variety of shapes.
Split:
Split is used to divide a part into multiple bodies. You can keep the bodies within the part or save them into separate part files. You can save them during the creation of the split feature, or use Save Bodies to save them after the spilt is complete.
Combine Manager:
Combine is used to specify multibody part to add, subtract, or overlap. The main difference between the assembly and combine is, in combine bodies contained within one multibody part file and cannot combine two separate parts. The combine has three operation types:
- ADD: - Combines solids of all selected bodies to create a single body.
- Subtract: - Remove overlapping material from a selected main body.
- Combine: - Remove all material except that which overlaps.
Composite Curve:
Features like sweep require that the path must be a single entity. It can be an edge, sketch, or a curve feature. When you have multiple entities, it can be combined using composite Curve feature.
Loft surfaces:
Loft surface feature is an important tool for surface modelling. This feature creates a shape by making transitions between multiple curves and the guide curves. This tool is very valuable for modelling complex surfaces.
Sweep Surfaces:
Sweep surface is a surface generating feature by moving 2D profile along a 2D or 3D sketch path.
Cut-Sweep:
Cut sweep come under the specifying modify parameters for boss. It is used to create the complex twisted or orientation cuts on the solid bodies.
Boundary Surface:
Boundary surface feature allows the user to create surfaces that are tangents or curvature continuous in both directions (all sides of the surface). This feature gives higher quality result than the loft tool.
Surface Trim:
Primarily used to cut away material from a surface and provides two modes: standard and mutual.
Surface Knit:
Surface knit tool combines two or more faces and surfaces into one. It creates a solid body when the knit surfaces form a closed volume or leave as a surface body.
