Introduction to National Building Code and Steps in a Construction project

1. Building codes for modeling/efficiency of drawing in revit:-

  • The National Building code is a document that provides guidelines for construction of structures like Residential, Institutional, Educational, Commercial, Assembly, and storage spaces.
  • It is important to follow these guidelines that are meant to protect the overall wealth of the construction and ensure the health and safety of the public and the residence.
  • These standards are published in 1970 and revised in later in 1983.
  • The latest version of National Building code is 2016.
  • A set of standards that are uniform to all structures.
  • These building codes are provide a set of standards that are uniform to all the structures.
  • So that they gain the modeling process.
  • These codes protects the overall wealth of the construction and public residence.
  • Then the designer constantly refer these building codes for modeling which enhance their knowledge in this field.
  • It also enables the modern construction menthods with the standard conventional standards.
  • Tese standards also help the government to approve the plans as it become the lack of particular juridiction by the appropriate govenrment or authority.
  • Therefore it provides the building standards with the approval of government agencies for approving of the plan.

2. Groups of National Building codes:-

Based on NBC, we can sub divided the group as 9.

  • Group-A:- Residential Building.
  • Group-B:- Educational Building.
  • Group-C:- Assembly Building.
  • Group-D:- Institutional Building.
  • Group-E:- Mercantile Building.
  • Group-F:- Business building.
  • Group-G:- Storage Buidling.
  • Group-H:- Industrial Buidling.
  • Group-I:- Hazardous Building.

3. Five Major steps that occur in Project cycle are:-

The basic steps from conceptualization to initial stage is

  • Initiation:- In this stage it is neccessary to figure out the objective of the project determined by the project and identified by the major steps of the project.
  • The major step involve in the Initiation stage is undertaking the feasability study then identifying the scope and then identifying the deliverable becomes out of this project.
  • Identifying the stack holders and finally developing the statement of work.
  • Planning:- When the initiation is approved, once the project is approved then moving forward for the planning.
  • During this face the large project is broken down into smaller tasks.
  • Build the team and prepare the schedule for completion of assignments.
  • To creating a smaller holes with the larger project making sure each is available with in the time.
  • Smaller hole should have high potential for the success.
  • Major step of the project planning is to create the project plan, workflow diagrams, estimating in the budgets, gathering resourcers, Anticipating risks and potential quality of blocks, and finally holding the project with the team.
  • Execution:- This face turns plan into action. I.e., the project manager job is to keep the work on track.
  • He/She organises the team members to manage the time and make sure the work is done according to the aspect of the original plan.
  • This execution stage may have the steps called creating the tasks, organising the work flows, communicating with the team members, monitoring quality of work then finally managing the budget as per the initiation project.
  • Closure:- Once the team has completed the work on the project, closure face starts.
  • In this closure face , provides final deliverable, release and determining the success of the project.
  • The major steps involved in the closure of the project are to analyse the project work, analysing the team performance, documenting project closure and need to conduct the post implementation reviews and finally accounting for used and unused budget.

4. Examples of different disciplines involved in the construction of a project are:

  • Construction:- Construction is manging the building of civil engineering system from begining to end which includes the cordination between both the owners, contractors and designers.
  • Finance and Estimating:- They can operate the business world which include accounting, financial conract, and estimating the cost of activities.
  • Contracts and Bid:- They demonstrating strong bidding practise and effective contract administration is integral to next job or project for the construction manager.
  • Geotechnical:-Designing foundations and earth quake systems to support soil and transfer load from structures into the earth by limiting the certaain works.
  • Managements:- Management helps to manage the equipment personal and supply the build more effectively and also economically.
  • Structural:- Structural team designing structural members used to support loads for a specified public functions such as bridge, building, dams and towers.
  • Surveying:- Apart from the surveying team, they can measure physical features for the horizantal distance snd elevation differences to determine the property lines building and produced in the maps.

5. A. Four unit Apartments:- As per NBC, Four Unit Apartments comes under Group-A which is a Residential Building.

B. School with capacity of 1000 students: As per NBC, School with capacity of 1000 students comes under Group-B which is a Eduational Building.

C. A Single unit Shop:- As per NBC, A Single unit Shop comes under Group-E which is a Mercantile Building.

D. Multi Story Building:- As per NBC, Multi Story Building comes under Group-E which is a Mercantile Building.

E. Steel Machine factory:- As per NBC, Steel Machine factory comes under Group-H which is a Industrial Building.

6. Design team:-

  • Helps to Finalise the plan- The project requiring such multiplinary inputs need a coordination approach among the professional for proper integration of various desintigration course.
  • And to take care of the complexity of the multi story building requirements, a design team of professional for required designing team shall be at the appropriate stage.
  • It is desirable that the multi disciplinary is initiated from the conceptual stage.
  • Evaluationaries in the project: The composition of the team shall depend on the nature and magnitude of the project.
  • Design and evaluationaries are participation of the owner is very important input at all the stages and same shall be designed by the design team.
  • Implementation the design: To implement the proper deisgns, the design team may be associated during the construction and execution stage also.
  • They follow the rule of NBC clause 4.1.

Management team:

  • The objective of the project management team is primarily they have to accomplishement of the project in accordance with the design and specticulation in the proper time and cost accumulation frame work.
  • They have to accomplish the project with effficient time and coated budget.
  • Execute the design- these teams are also responsible for the day to day execution as well as design supervision, quality control, etc., and they also ensure interdisciplinary coordination during the construction stgae.
  • They have to satisfy the completion of the project.
  • They also have to responsible for the satiisfactory completion of the project With regarding to quality, cost and time managemnet.
  • Some design team may also included in this team.
  • All their works both design team and managemnt team are followed as NBC clause 4.1 and 4.2

7. Modeling requirements for the project are:-

A. Height Limitations:-

  • As per NBC 2005, Clause C-2.5, the height of the building shall not exceed 15m.
  • Then there is no need to provide lifts.
  • Housing for low income groups shall preferably be up to maximum fo two storeys.
  • Buildings for housing beyond 15m in height shall be restored to in exceptional circumstances and should be governed by the provisions laid down in the code.
  • About my model - The height of the building in my model is 6.4m which is less than 15m. Hence it follows NBC guidelines.
  • Area limitations:- According to NBC 2005, the minimum pot size with ground coverage not exceeding 75%, shall not be less than 40 sq.m in small and medium town and not less tha 30 sq.m in metropolitan areas.
  • Plot sizes below 30m^2 but not less than 15m may be permitted in case of cluster planning.
  • However in such cases the ground coverage and FSI shall be 100 percent and 2 percent respectively.
  • About my model:- The area occupied by the bulding in my model is greater than 60 sq.m. Floor area of my model is 47'8"X 40'8" i.e., 175 sq.m
  • Room Sizing:- Every dwelling unit to be provided should have at least two habitable rooms.
  • Even if one room house is provided initially it should be capable of adding a new second room in future.
  • However, In case single room tenements are required to be provided where future additions are not possible,
  • the carpet area of multipurpose single room should be atleast 12.5m^2.
  • Such one room dwelling units with 12.5m^2 carpet area of habitable space is permitted only incase of on site reahbilitation of slum dwellers.
  • In a hous of 2 rooms, first room shall not be less that 9.0m and minimum width of 2.5 m provided and second room shall not be less than 6.5 m^2 with a minimum width of 2.1m.
  • In incremental housing the bigger room shall always be the first room.
  • Wall Height: Accoding to the NBC 2005 clause F-3.4, the minimum height of rooms and spaces shall be
  • A. habitable room - 2.75m
  • B.Kitchen - 2.6m
  • C. bath/Water closet - 2.2m
  • Corridors - 2.1m
  • In case of sloping roof of the coverage height of roofs for habitable rooms hsall be 2.75m and minimum height shall be 2.1m.
  • In my model the wall has the height of 3m and satisfirs the NBC.
  • Thickness based on fire and life safety:- The thickness for masonary walls is given by the table 2 of fire and life safety section of NBC 2005
  • In my model the wall thickness is 8" which is greater that NBC model.
  • Passageway Requirements: As per NBC 2005, Table 1
  • In my model it satisfies all the requirements.
