Introduction to National Building Code and Steps in a Construction project

ANS 1)

Aim: Building codes or standards essential for the modeling/ efficiency of drawings in Revit.

  • National Building codes are used for the constrution of structures like residential, mercantile, institutional, educational, commercial, assembly, storage spaces and hazardous buildings. It ensures the health and safety of the construction and also ensure the health of the public and residence.
  • These codes are published in 1970 and revised in 1983 than in 2005 and the latest version of national building code is published in 2016.
  • These building codes are set of standard that are uniform to all structures.
  • These codes protects the construction safety.
  • These codes provide modern constrution methods.
  • Provides building standards.

ANS 2)

Aim: Listing the groups of the national building code which are essential to begin the modelling in Autodesk Revit.

  1. Group A: Residential Buildings
  2. Group B: Educational Buildings
  3. Group C: Assembly Buildings
  4. Group D: Institutional Buildings
  5. Group E: Mercantile Buildings
  6. Group F: Business Buildings
  7. Group G: Storage Buildings
  8. Group H: Industrial Buildings
  9. Group J: Hazardous Buildings

ANS 3)

Aim: Listing the major steps that occur in project cycle.

  • Initiation : In this stage it is necessary to figure out the objective of the project and determine the project is feasable. identifying the scope of the project.
  • Planning : Once the project is approved to move forward after intiation next step is planning. In planning the large project is broken down into smaller tasks, building the team and prepare the schedule to complete the assignment. Creating the project plan and creating the workflow diagram, estimating the budgets, gathering resources etc.
  • Execution : After the planning execution phase is start. This execution stage we have steps called creating tasks and organising workflows , briefing teammates about the projects, communicate with the team members and managing the budget as per the initiation project.
  • Closure : In the closure stage provides the final deliverables release and determine the success of the project. Analizing the project performance, analizing the team performance, documenting project closure and accounting for the used and unused budget.

ANS 4)

Aim: Some Examples of different disciplines involved in construction of a project.

  • Constrution
  • Finance and estimating
  • Contracts and bid
  • Geotechnical
  • Managements
  • Structural
  • Surveying

ANS 5)

Aim: Classsification of buildings.

  • Group A: Residential Buildings
  • Group B: Educational Buildings
  • Group C: Assembly Buildings
  • Group D: Institutional Buildings
  • Group E: Mercantile Buildings
  • Group F: Business Buildings
  • Group G: Storage Buildings
  • Group H: Industrial Buildings
  • Group J: Hazardous Buildings
  1. Four unit apartments - Group A: Residential Buildings.
  2. School with capacity of 1000 students - Group B: Educational Buildings.
  3. A single unit shop - Group E: Mercantile Buildings.
  4. Multi Storey shopping complex - Group E: Mercantile Buildings
  5. Steel machine factory - Group H: Industrial Buildings.

ANS 6)

Aim: Roles of the Design team and Management Team.

Design Team:

  • Helps to finalise the plan.
  • Evaluationaries in the project.
  • Implementation the designs.

Management Team

  • Accomplishment of project.
  • Execute the design.
  • Achieves the satisfactory completion of the project.

ANS 7)

Aim: Identifying the modelling requirements for the project.

  • Height Limitations : As per NBC 2005, Clause C-2.5, the height of the building shall not exceed 15m. The height of my model is 6.4m which is less than 15m. Hence, it follows the NBC guidelines.
  • Area Limitations : As per NBC 2005, clause C-2.3.1, the minimum plot size with ground coverage not exceeding 75%, shall not be less than 40sq.m in small and medium town and not less than 30 sq.m in metropolitan area. The area occupied by my model is greater than 40sq.m. Hence it follows the NBC guidelines.
  • Room sizing : As per the NBC 2005, c-3.3, in a house of 2 rooms, first room shall not be less tham 9m^2 with minimum width of 2.5m and second room shall not be less than 6.5m^2 with a minimum width of 2.1m.In my model the number of rooms in the building is 4 and the total area of the rooms is 149.3m^2, which is greater than the specified value in the code. Hence the building is safe.
  • Wall height : According to NBC 2005, Clause F-3.4, the minimum height of the rooms and spaces should be:
  1. Habitable room - 2.75m
  2. Kitchen - 2.6m
  3. Bath/Water closet - 2.2m
  4. Corridors - 2.1m

In my model the walls of height of the walls is 3m, hence it is satisfied.

  • Thickness based on fire life and safety : The thickness of masonary walls is given by the table 2 of fire and life safety section of NBC 2005. In my model the wall thickness id 8"(203mm) which is greater than the specified value in the NBC code book. Hence the model is safe.
  • Passageway requirements : As per the NBC 2005, Table 1, Width and length of passage way is given. in my model the passageway requirement is as per the NBC .
