Introduction to National Building Code and Steps in a Construction project

1)

Reasons why building codes and standars are essential for the modelling in Revit are:

  • They are a set of standards uniform to all structures.
  • It helps avoid cost iverrun.
  • It helps manage time and cost of project efficiently.
  • It provides standard safety precautions eliminating threats.
  • Designing a building must adhere to the codes to get the approval of government to start construction.

2)

Based on NBC the groups that will be essential while modelling in Revit are:

Group A: Residential buildings

Group B: Educational buildings

Group C: Assembly buildings

Group D: Institutional buildings

Group E: Mercantile buildings

Group F: Business buildings

Group G: Storage buildings

Group H: Industrial buildings

Group I: Hazardous buildings

3)

The five major steps that occur in a project life cycle are:

  1. Project Initiation: Identifying scope, stakeholders etc.
  2. Project development: Team building, preparing schedules etc.
  3. Planning for construction: Creating plans, estimating costs, cgathering resources and anticipating risks.
  4. Project Exeucution: the plans are put to execution, organising andmanaging the work efficiently to minimize cost and time.
  5. Closure: Accounting the budget, documenting and analysing the project and team performance for future reference.

4) The different disciplines involved in construction of a project are:

  • Architect
  • Civil Engineer
  • Structural Engineer
  • Geotechnical Engineer
  • Electrical Engineer
  • Plumbing Engineer
  • Fire protection Engineer
  • HVAC Engineer
  • Lift, escalator specialist
  • Acoustic specialist
  • Information/Communication technology Engineer
  • Environment/ Sustainability specialist
  • Town planner
  • Urban designer
  • Landscape Architect
  • Security system specialist
  • Interior designer
  • Quantity surveyor
  • Project/ Construction manager
  • Accesibility and universal design specialist
  • Asset/facility manager etc.

5)

Buildings are classified as:

  • Residential buildings
  • Educational buildings
  • Institutional buildings
  • Assembly buildings
  • Business buildings
  • Mercantile buildings
  • Industrial buildings
  • Storage buildings
  • Hazardous buildings

a. Four unit apartments- Residential building

b. School with 1000 students- Educational building

c. Single unit shop- Mercantile building

d. Multi story shopping complex- Mercantile/ Commercial building

e. Steel machine factory- Industrial building.

6)

Roles of the Design team:

  • Development of design based on rquirement.
  • Finalisation of plan
  • Evaluationaries in the project
  • Implentation of the design.

Roles of the management team:

  • Monitoring time, quality and cost.
  • Execution and supervision of design.
  • Overseeing satisfactory completion of project.

7)

Modelling requirements for the project:

a. Height limitations:

As per NBC 2005 Clause C-2.5, the height of the building shall not exceed 15m.

b. Area limitations:

As per NBC 2005 Clause C-2.3.1, the minimum plot size with ground coverage not exceeding 75% shall not be less 40 sq.m in small and medium town and not less than 30 sq.m in metropolitan area.

c. Room sizing:

As per NBC 2005, C-3.3

d. Wall height:

As per NBC 2005 Clause F-3.4, the minimum height of rooms and spaces be:

Habitable room- 2.75m

Kitchen- 2.6m

Bath/ Water closet- 2.2m

Corridor- 2.1m

e. Thickness based on fire and life safety:

Table 2 of Fire and life safety section of NBC .

f. Passageway requirements:

Table 1 of NBC requirements.

8) Project Model in reference to NBC modelling requirements:

a. Height limitations - The height of the model is 7m, therefore it is in compliance with NBC guidelines.

b. Area limitations - The floor area of the model is 63'4" x 55'8", therefore it is in compliance with NBC guidelines.

c. Room sizing - The model is in compliance with NBC guidelines.

d. Wall height - The wall heights of the habitable rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, corridors in the model are 3m, therefore it is in compliance with NBC guidelines.

e. Thickness based on fire and life safety - The thickness of the walls in the model are in compliance with the Table 2 of NBC guidelines.

f. Passageway requirements - The passageways in the model are in compliance with Table 1 of NBC guidelines.

FINAL RESULT:

As the numbers are all in compliance with the NBC guidelines revisions have not been made to the model.
