Introduction to National Building Code and Steps in a Construction project
1) Aim of this question is to understand the need for building codes while modelling and effeciency of drawings in revit.
Ans. Building codes or standards are essential for the modeling of drawings in revit because:
a)codes are designed to protect buildings and the people from fire, earthquakes, windstorm and other types of natural calamities.
b)They also perform the structural integrity, electrical, plumbing and mechanical system safety.
c)Proper accessibility and practical design of building is achieved through national building codes and also energy efficiency of building is achieved by following the national building code while designing.
d) It protects construction safety & modern construction method.
2) Aim of this question is to know the list of groups that will be essential to us when we begin modeling in Autodesk Revit.
Ans. List of groups that will be essential to us when we begin modelling in autodesk Revit can be classified under nine groups
a) Group A: Residential buildings.
b) Group B: Educational buildings.
c) Group C: Assembly buildings.
d) Group D: Institutional buildings.
e) Group E: Mercantile builkdings.
f) Group F: Buisness buildings.
g) Group G: Storage buildings.
h) Group H: Industrial buildings.
g) Group I: Hazardious buildings.
3) Aim of this question is to list the five major steps that occur in project cycle.
Ans: a) Initialization of the project.
b) Planning of the project.
c) Execution of the project.
d) Closure of the entire project.
4) Aim of this question is to know the examples of different disciplines involved in construction of a project.
Ans: a) Construction-Construction of project from start to end of the project.
b) Finance and estimating- Cost calculation and preparing of budget of the project.
c) Contracts and bid- Managing the contracts and bid of the project.
d) Geotechnical-Involves soil analysis and report of soil strata.
e) Managements- Management of entire project from begining to end.
f) Structural - Preparation of struction design and report of the project.
g) Surveying - Site Survey, layout of the land map, layout of the buildings etc.
5) Aim of this question is to know the types of building classification and place the building under the categories as per listed in the question.
Ans: Buildings are classified as Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E & Group F, Group G, Group H, Group I
a) Four unit apartments - Gropu A(Residential building)
b) School with capacity of 1000 students - Group B( Educational building)
c) A single unit shop - Group E(Mercantile)
d) Multi story Shopping complex - Group E(Mercantile)
e) Steel maschine factory - Group H(Industrial building)
6) Aim of this question is to distinguish the roles of design team and management team.
Ans:
| Design Team | Management Team |
| a) Implementing the designs | a) Execute the design |
| b) Preparing of Plans | b) Manage the entire project |
| c) Creating of concepts | c) Accomplishment of the project |
| d) Finalizes the plan | d) Achieve the satisfactory completion of the project |
7) Aim of this question is to identify the modeling requirements for the project
Ans: a) Height Limitation: As per NBC 2005, clause c-2.5, the height of the building shall not exceed 15m.
i) For buildings upto to the height of 15m no lift is required.
ii) Housing for the low-income group shall preferably be up to maximum of two storeys.
iii) Buildings for housing beyond 15m in height should be resorted to in exceptional circumstances and it should be governed by provisions laid down in the NBC code.
My model has two storey less than 15m.
b) Area Limitations: As per NBC C-2.3.1, page no. 43, the minimum plot size with ground coverage not exceeding 75%, shall not be less than 40 sq.m in small and medium town and not less than 30 sq.m in metropolitan.
In my model the floor area of building is greater than 40sq.m
c) Room Sizing: The carpet area of multipurpose single room should be atleast 12.5 sq.m. In abuse of two rooms, first room shall not be less than 9 sq.m with minimum width of 2.5 m and second room shall not be less than 6.5 sq.m with a minimum width of 2.1m provided the total area of both the rooms is not less than 15.5 sq.m.
In my model the carpet area of a room is greater than 12.5 sq.m.
d) Wall Height: a) Habitable room - 2.75m
b) Kitchen - 2.6m
c) Bath/ Water closet - 2.2m
d) Corridors - 2.1m
In case of sloping roof the average height of roofs for habitable rooms shall be 2.75m and the minimum height at eaves shall be 2.1m.
In my model all rooms floor height is 3m which is greater than than 2.1m which is minimum value.
e) Thickness based on fire life and safety: The thickness for masonry walls is given by the table 2 of fire and life safety section of NBC 2005.
As per my model I have used architectural wall of 10" which is greater than the specified value in the NBC code book.
f) Passageway Requirements: As per NBC 2005 table 1
width of means of access is 6m length of means access is 75m
width 7.5m than length 150m. Similarly 24 width length should be above 1000m. In my model it satisfies the value as per NBC table 1.
8) As per this question we have identified the requirements for modelling as per question 7 and also used these numbers from code book and verified and compared the two models I have made at previous week sessions and it seems the numbers are reasonable and followed the NBC rules. So no revisions of the model is needed.
