Challenge

Internal Geneva Mechanism

Objective

  • Create the 3D model of the internal Geneva mechanism.
  • Perform motion analysis by rotating the driver wheel at 10rpm.
  • Obtain the following plots
    • Contact force (between driving and the driven wheel) as a function of time.
    • Angular Displacement of the driven wheel.
  • Compare the contact forces with and without "Precise contact".
  • Make a plot of the driver wheel's angular velocity.

Theory

Geneva mechanism, also called Geneva Stop, one of the most commonly used devices for producing rotary motion, characterized by alternate periods of motion and rest with no reversal in direction. It is also used for indexing (i.e., rotating a shaft through a prescribed angle).

3D model

Plot for motion analysis at 10RPM (Contact force)
  • Without precise contact

fig 1

  • With precise contact at 60 fps

fig 2

  • Angular Displacement of the driven wheel.

fig 3

  • Driver wheel's angular velocity at 20RPM (120 fps)

fig 4

Selection of Precise Contact

Result

The plot show clearly the contact where the driver wheel and the driven wheel connacted in first fig.

In second fig the plot show the result when precise contact is salected at 60 fps it will clear the contct more sharpaly.

In fig 3 we see the behaviour angular displacement of driven wheel.

In fig 4 we see the velocity of driven wheel at the speed of 20 RPM and the precise contact ar 120 fps.
