Hood design-Week 2
HOOD
Hood is one important product to achieve the process of covering the engine and is easily accessible while needed (major purpose)

- Which is play a major role in accidents, while impact hood was one of the initial parts that receive the impact also has the purpose to deform to distribute the impact force (majorly nullifying) and change the direction of force away from the driver
Hood components
- Outer panel
- Inner panel
- Latch
- Hinge
- Reinforcement
Outer panel
Which is Class A object is too visible to the customer, one of the important parts of the aesthetic of the car

Inner panel
All the functions required for the hood are not achieved by only the outer panel so the inner panel is also used to perform deformation as per the requirement

Emboss cuts play a major role in pedestrian accident .because the pedestrian's head will impact the hood while the accident, cut-outs are used to reduce the reactional impact force and leads to deformations
Latch
Which is a mechanical component used to lock (temporary join) for the hood to stay joined at its position by inter-locking

- Latch trajectory
The hood is rotated along the axis of the hinge, so the locking mechanism is also tangents with the circle with the centre point of the hinge axis

Hinge
Which is a rotating mechanism used to rotate the hood along with the hinge axis use of journal bearing

Reinforcement
Sheet metal is used to create the inner panel of the thickness(0.75mm as per the design) but the parts of the latch and hinge are required the excess support to remain in it position and distribute is forces

Mastic points
The A-class materials are visible to the customers .so the joining methods like welding are unable to use because they will not produce the good aesthetics of the A-class materials .so mastic point is used to apply the adhesive material to join the class A material with other materials

Emboss
Which is the stamping process used to rise and sink the sheet metals according to the requirement with the help of rollers.

Deep drawing
Which is the metal forming process used by the die and puncher used to draw the sheet metal with the deep formation.

Hemming
Which is a joining process used to join the inner and outer panels by bending the sheet metal with the draft by roller

Hemming relief

which is a cut-out used to remove the excess material
Design factors to consider
- Head impact zone

Which is the zone where the head of the pedestrian head will impact the hood.
- Wrap around distance

Which is the measuring distance where the head of a child and adult is about to hit.
- Type of support
Support rod/ Gas stay
As per the name support rod is a rod with a non-linear shape is used to support the hood while opening
Gas stay is the cylinder component used to support the hood which normally available on high-end cars
